Naayir
Naayir are sacred, yet feared creatures believed to be the children of the Lake of Origins itself. Shapeshifters and manipulators of matter, they stalk the Naayu and certain parts of the world above. They are most commonly sighted in the Yu'dzin Undermountain, where they are a a genuine threat to those who wander off alone, especially near the caves that lead into the Naayu. They exist elsewhere, but are seen far less often, and most people are more than happy with this.
Though they are terrifying, the Oara religion also teaches to respect the Naayir as creators. They are not to be eaten, unless times are desperate, and are not to be killed for sport. Any who do the latter will face the court's judgement, often leading to expulsion from Ylis.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The one constant in Naayr biology is the fact that no two are the same. They usually appear catlike and nimble, about the size of a cougar. They may shift their forms constantly, taking on horns, varying types of tails, burning eyes, a ghostly visage, or other types of otherworldly features.
Genetics and Reproduction
Naayir's method of reproduction is unknown. Some suggest that it is sexual, similar to other animal species, though the dominant theory is that existing Naayir can simply construct their offspring using their psionic abilities. Other theories suggest a Naayir can take in excess matter over time and divide itself in two, or that the Lake of Origins itself births new Naayu during a conjunction or eclipse.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Naayir inside the Naayu do not need to eat to survive, but those outside typically use animals as their source of energy. They have been known to attack people in the past, but usually focus on smaller prey such as Raenaks.
