Once upon a time, in a far away land of untouched nature, there was a river. This river of fast, crystal waters was full of life. This river was a happy place where animals enjoyed their lives. Among those animals, fishes were the most numerous, and among the fishes, red salmons were some of the most beautiful. It is said that among all the salmons, there was a really beautiful one. He had really shiny scales, as red as roses. His fins were soft as silk and transparent as crystal, while his eyes had coppery a shade and were shiny as gold.   Every time he went somewhere, the other fish looked at him because of his beauty, and many of them fell in love with him, but he didn't care. Until one day, he saw his reflection on a clam's shell. On the reflection, he saw a really beautiful fish, enough for amazing himself.   As the time passed by, his ego grew bigger and bigger. He tended to spend lots of time looking at himself on the mirrored clams that lived in the river. He even used to not pay attention when someone else spoke to him while he was looking at himself.   It is said that one day, a rumor about a dangerous visit coming to the river began to spread. All the fishes and other animals began to stock and prepare themselves for hiding. As told by many of the fishes, just one week was left for finding a safe place until the predator was gone.   A week passed, it was the last day before the disaster according to most of the fish, and almost everyone had found a shelter for themselves and their families. Almost everyone was already hiding, and the "almost" means that the salmon was left outside of his shelter.   "Wow, I can't believe I'm so beautiful and handsome! I am the most handsome fish ever!", said the salmon as always, looking at his reflection.   "Hey, come here! A danger is coming, you should get to a safe place!", exclaimed his brother, who was hiding in a cave near to him, which also was the place where he was supposed to hide.   The Vain Salmon didn't care, he didn't listen to his brother. His brother began to warn him over and over, but he didn't care.   In just a little while, a shadow in the sky was seen from below the clear waters and a scream was heard. The rumor was real, as the "dangerous visit" was a fishing hawk.   The salmon was still looking at himself and flattering his own appeared on the reflection until he noticed a large shadow getting closer and closer to him. All the signals were clear, but he just didn't care. It was already too late, the hawk was coming to trap and eat him.   The fish tried to swim away, but he got caught by the prey bird. The bird flew up with him between its claws. The salmon didn't want to be eaten. He didn't accept it.   Then, the fish tried and tried to escape from the sharp claws of the hawk. After trying for a while, he finally could slip-free. But when sliding between the bird's fingers, all his beautiful red scales detached from his body, which ended looking gray and opaque.   He fell to the water, he was now safe. But when he looked at his reflection again, he was unrecognizable. All the beautiful scales he once used to preach were gone. His ego ended his own beauty.   Nowadays, his descendants are still swimming in the clear crystal rivers, but have a rather modest color scheme and now are more elusive than the fish who used to be called "The Vain Salmon".
