Orc
Orcs are burly raiders with prominent lower canines that resemble tusks.
Gruumsh One-Eye. Orcs worship Gruumsh, the mightiest of the orc deities and their creator. The orcs believe that in ancient days, the gods gathered to divide the world among their followers. When Gruumsh claimed the mountains, he learned they had been taken by the dwarves. He laid claim to the forests, but those had been settled by the elves. Each place that Gruumsh wanted had already been claimed. The other gods laughed at Gruumsh, but he responded with a furious bellow. Grasping his mighty spear, he laid waste to the mountains, set the forests aflame, and carved great furrows in the fields. Such was the role of the orcs, he proclaimed, to take and destroy all that the other races would deny them. To this day, the orcs wage an endless war on humans, elves, dwarves, and other folk.
Orcs hold a particular hatred for elves. The elven god Corellon Larethian half-blinded Gruumsh with a well-placed arrow to the orc god’s eye. Since then, the orcs have taken particular joy in slaughtering elves. Turning his injury into a baleful gift, Gruumsh grants divine might to any champion who willingly plucks out one of its eyes in his honor.
Tribes Like Plagues. Orcs gather in tribes that exert their dominance and satisfy their bloodlust by plundering villages, devouring or driving off roaming herds, and slaying any humanoids that stand against them. After savaging a settlement, orcs pick it clean of wealth and items usable in their own lands. They set the remains of villages and camps ablaze, then retreat whence they came, their bloodlust satisfied.
Ranging Scavengers. Their lust for slaughter demands that orcs dwell always within striking distance of new targets. As such, they seldom settle permanently, instead converting ruins, cavern complexes, and defeated foes’ villages into fortified camps and strongholds. Orcs build only for defense, making no innovation or improvement to their lairs beyond mounting the severed body parts of their victims on spiked stockade walls or pikes jutting up from moats and trenches.
When an existing territory is depleted of food, an orc tribe divides into roving bands that scout for choice hunting grounds. When each party returns, it brings back trophies and news of targets ripe for attack, the richest of which is chosen. The tribe then sets out en masse to carve a bloody path to its new territory.
On rare occasions, a tribe’s leader chooses to hold onto a particularly defensible lair for decades. The orcs of such a tribe must range far across the countryside to sate their appetites.
Leadership and Might. Orc tribes are mostly patriarchal, flaunting such vivid or grotesque titles as Many-Arrows, Screaming Eye, and Elf Ripper. Occasionally, a powerful war chief unites scattered orc tribes into a single rampaging horde, which runs roughshod over other orc tribes and humanoid settlements from a position of overwhelming strength.
Strength and power are the greatest of orcish virtues, and orcs embrace all manner of mighty creatures in their tribes. They proudly welcome ogres, trolls, half-orcs, and orogs into their ranks. As well, orcs respect and fear the size and power of evil giants, and often serve them as guards and soldiers.
Orc Progeny with Non-Orcs. The offspring of an orc and a non-orc humanoid of similar stature is either an orc or a half-orc. When an orc produces young with an ogre, the child is a half-ogre of intimidating strength and brutish features called an ogrillon.
From the Awakening a whole new Orc culture emerged: Leadership is a deeply ingrained aspect of pureblood orc culture. Each individual pureblood orc considers themselves a leader, and pride in one's bloodline is a cornerstone of their culture, viewing themselves as the chosen ones who have been purified by Shargaas. The epic sacrifice of Gruumak at Fort Triumph is revered as an act of great foresight.
Equites. These warriors descend from the noble class of Orc society. They are armed with the best weapons and armored in the best armor. They are often in charge of a maniple of their own. Groups of purebloods may also be bound together in large scale conflicts where they often serve as mounted combatants.
Chief. Those who become leaders among the Pureblooded Orcs are in charge of an entire tribe. A tribe will go to war formed as a manipular legion.
The War of Unyielding Shadows
In the turbulent annals of Kildar's history, a dark chapter unfolded when the Orc tribes, typically fractured and embroiled in internal strife, found an unprecedented unity under the banner of a charismatic leader named Gruumak the Unifier. Fuelled by grievances against the Guilds of Kildar, Gruumak ignited an Orc revolt that would plunge the kingdom into a protracted conflict known as the War of Unyielding Shadows. Pureblooded. The pureblood orcs do not believe that the victory at Fort Triumph was a natural occurrence. Gruumsh is the supreme god of the pantheon, but he delegates to Shargaas the task of removing the weak members from Orc society. The "loss" at Fort Triumph was a grand scheme by Gruumsh and Shargaas to purify orcs from weak elements. Gruumak's title is "the Unifier," and what made him great for a while ultimately led to his downfall: an orc cannot rely on others without becoming weaker themselves. The epic duel between Destro and Gruumak is a farce: Gruumak had a dream from Shargaas before the Battle of Triumph and sacrificed himself and the fort for a greater purpose—the awakening of pureblood orcs. They literally call this event the Awakening. Pureblood orcs believe that losing the War of Unyielding Shadows was necessary to purify the orc race. The remaining orcs have proven themselves and can now take their natural place as warlords. Every pureblood orc believes they are a leader and takes great pride in their blood. They do not want to mix with others, using half-orcs and other races to fill their war bands. Pureblood orcs have great respect for each other. The War of Unyielding Shadows taught them that they are the chosen ones now that Shargaas has purified their race. Shargaas, the god to whom Gruumsh delegated the purification of the orc race, is venerated in spiritual practices. Pureblood orcs seek guidance from Shargaas and attribute their awakening and purification to divine intervention. Annually, pureblood orcs gather at the ruins of Fort Triumph to commemorate the epic sacrifice made by Gruumak. Under the flickering glow of a communal fire, warriors partake in the Blood Bond Ceremony. The rhythmic beating of war drums sets the backdrop as the orcs make incisions in their palms. It is mingled in a cauldron of strong drink and all orcs partake in getting hammered on the brew. Šraku, City of the Resurgence. Šraku stands as a living testament of its history. The aftermath of the War of Unyielding Shadows brought about a fusion of bloodlines, shaping a society where half-Orcs outnumber their Pureblood counterparts. The remaining pureblood Orcs, now known as the "Awakened," are venerated as leaders who believe the War of Unyielding Shadows was a necessary sacrifice for purifying their race. The mingling of bloodlines permeates every aspect of the urban landscape.Tribal Military
For Orcs, the terms Tribe and Legion have become interchangeable. Orc tribes on kildar have become structured and your standing as a member of the tribe is entirely based on your rank within the legion and the purity of your blood. The manipular legion is organized into halfblood battle lines. These battle lines consist of military units known as maniples. Starting at the front is the velites, then the hastati, the principes and finally the triarii. These are divided by experience, with the younger soldiers at the front lines and the older soldiers near the back. This order is adapted to the Orc culture of savagery and bravery, allowing an initial show of individual heroics among the younger soldiers. Occasionally the half orcs are supported in battle by Thralls. Thralls. The lowest of the societal ranks is the thrall, beneath even the lowliest of halfblood orcs. These people have no orc blood running through their veins, and thus are treated as thirdclass citizens with barely any rights. They are people from various backgrounds, used for nothing but labor. In the rare occasions when they are deployed into battle, thralls function as barely armed skirmishers, dressed in rags. They are not given any armor and armed with nothing but slings and daggers. These warriors from various backgrounds are bound in servitude to the Pureblood Orc that commands them. Driven on, often by whip, they support half orc troops in battle by launching a hail of stones from safety. The only way for thralls to escape this societal dead end is to become the spouse of a halfblood orc, after which they will be referred to as a brood thrall, a step above labor thralls.Halfblood
Velites. The Velites are adolescent Half Orcs, reckless and eager to prove themselves so that they may gain reputation and promotion. In front of the maniples, the velites form a swarm of halfbloods which engage the enemy at the start of the battle. They shower the enemy with javelins before retreating to cover the flanks. The bravest among them go into battle with nothing more than animal skins draped across them to show their fearlessness. They are typically armed with an axe or shortsword, shield and javelin. Their duties involve skirmishing, and they often work closely with the cavalry. Retreating troops of the velites can typically withdraw without disrupting those behind them due to the spaces left between the maniples. Hastati. Next, the hastati are those warriors that passed their rite of passage. These Halfbloods have proven that they have the discipline and maturity needed to fight on the frontlines. They wear layers of hides and helmets. They are armed with a shortsword, shield and javelin. These young adults are the least experienced adults, and therefore fight on the front-lines. They form the first line of heavy infantry. Where resistance is strong the hastati would dissolve back through the halfblood lines, allowing the more experienced soldiers in the principes to fight. Principes. The principes are more experienced soldiers who stand behind the hastati in battle. These Veteran Half Orcs have proven themselves to the chieftain time and time again. They have earned the privilege of wearing armor. They wear ring mail and they are armed with a shortsword, shield and javelin. Once the Hastati retreat, it is the Principes who have the job of crushing the enemy. In turn, the principes can then yield to the hardened triarii, but only if absolutely necessary. Triarii. Finally, the triarii are handpicked soldiers, selected by Gruumsh himself. In battle they form the back lines, as the most elite unit to use only when the situation is dire enough that they are needed. They also have a secondary function, deterring any who would flee by turning them back with pointy spears. They wear ringmail and are armed with a shield and spear. They gain Gruumsh’s blessing and use it to bolster morale of the troops in front of them.Pureblood
