Mercenary Guild
The Mercenaries Guild stands as a pivotal force, offering essential military support to the cities of Kildar. Established by charters or letters of authority, the Guild holds a monopoly on mercenary services within the cities where it operates, with the endorsement of the local rulers.
They take pride in their reputation for delivering exceptional service and impose fines on members who deviate from their standards. The guild's aim is to maintain a ratio of three mercenaries for every hundred inhabitants in every chapter city.
Structure
Typically, the captain of a chapterhouse rises from the ranks of the local elite, while the guild's standard-bearer is a prosperous young adventurer. Serving as an officer within the Mercenaries Guild often acts as a gateway to more influential roles in the city's governance.
The guild is composed of seasoned and proven experts, known as master mercenaries. The captain is a primus inter pares among the other master mercenaries.
Prospective members undergo a training period, and are known as apprentices, as they learn basic techniques until deemed trustworthy to safeguard the guild's secrets.
Journeymen, distinct from apprentices, have the flexibility to work for various masters and are typically compensated daily, serving as day laborers. After several years of service and proven skill and heart in battle, the apprentice is promoted to the rank of journeyman. This elevation comes with official documents certifying the journeyman's status, enabling them to travel to other towns and countries to learn from different masters. Following a journey and accumulating additional experience, a journeyman can attain the status of master mercenary.
Culture
Members are required to procure their own weapons and attire. Whether skilled martials or spell casters, the mercenaries refine their combat skills at designated training grounds, called chapterhouses. Some larger have a special place for certamen, or magical combat. Adjacent to these areas is a robust structure where they engage in indoor exercises and hold strategic meetings. Over the centuries, these grand halls have become adorned with epic depictions of the guild's exploits.
In addition to the chapterhouse structure, temporary divisions known as methodologies can be formed, falling under the direct authority of the Council of Captains. These units, drawn from the pool of master mercenaries an journeymen, are often summoned for specific tasks or threats. Examples of past methodologies include the Pan Dimensional Corps (combat on other planes of existence), the Chronomauts (addressing future time crimes), and the Psychological Evaluation and Maintenance Division (erasing memories after aberration breaches).
Assets
Sentinel Hold, the Mercenaries Guild headquarters, stands at the heart of the city of Calthan. Its walls and defensive structures cast an imposing shadow that stretches across the skyline. Grand statues depicting battles and reliefs adorn the exterior walls. Stepping through the gates into Sentinel Hold, the rooms and halls within are adorned with murals and tapestries that illustrate the Guild's exploits.
Surrounding the keep are training grounds, divided into sections for martial training and certamen. Adjacent to these training grounds are meeting halls, where the master mercenaries engage in tactical discussions, surrounded by walls adorned with detailed maps depicting the lands in which they operate.
A dedicated section within the tower of Sentinel Hold houses the guild archives. This repository holds the secrets of the guild's history, codes, and strategies, its access guarded by the highest-ranking members to ensure confidentiality. Esprit hall is reserved for the promotion ceremonies of journeymen to master mercenaries. The Council Chamber, a central hub within Sentinel Hold, hosts the Council of Captains. The circular room holds a large, round table.
For temporary deployments, Sentinel Hold provides Methodology barracks. These flexible and adaptive spaces accommodate members assigned to specific methodologies, ensuring they have the resources and facilities required for their specialized tasks. From here, the Pan Dimensional Corps, Chronomauts, and other specialized units embark on their missions to safeguard the realm.
History
The Mercenaries affiliated with the Guild may typically expect small scale employments like guarding caravans or clearing monster hideouts. But the events the Guild grew famous over is the few large scale conflicts in Kildar in which they took part. Key among these is the War of Unyielding Shadows, a conflict where the Guild fielded mercenary companies en masse under the employ of the other united Guilds of Kildar.
