The Five Free Peoples

In the beginning Mahvhiy created the Five Free Peoples: Men, Elves, Dwarfs, Merfolk, and Ombers. Each people were given domain over something.

Of the Merfolk

To the Merfolk was given all the seas and oceans to heugh and put in shape and populate, for as yet the ocean was a shallow wasteland of sand. So Mahvhiy gave them a fair valley and filled it with all manner of fish and sea creatures, and He commanded them to fill all the ocean and make it beautiful.

Of the Ombers

To the Ombors he gave the fields and meadows and wetlands and all grassy places to fill with small plats and shape into fairness. And He gave them a great swamp and prairie, and He filled it with all manner of snakes and flying insects and beetles, creatures both great and small, and He commanded them to spread the beauty of all flowers and small plants all over the grassy places of the world.

Of the Dwarfs

To the Dwarfs He gave the rocky places of the world, both caves and mountains to mine for their beautiful gems and metals, and to hew into great buildings and statues. And he gave them a plateau over many great caverns and gulches, and he commanded them to fill the world with the caverns which He had given them, and to shape all the mountains of the world.

Of the Elves

To the Elves He gave all the great forest and all mammals, great and small, to nurture and care for and spread over the whole world. And he gave them a great forest full of all manner of deer and wolves and apes and bears and all animals of such kind, and He also gave them many different types of trees, great and small, and he commanded them to extend their reach far and wide, and to cover the waste places of the world.

Of the Men

These he split into four different peoples, each governing over something. Three He made as the lesser, which were later called the Amnoon, and one the greater, which were later called the Eldest.

The Amnoon

The Haranites
To the Haranites He gave the birds of the air and land and sea to use and to send forth, and He also gave them the gift of the seeing of things far off and of the knowledge of weather. And He gave them a very great mountain, the largest in all of Kezoo, to perch upon and see many things, and He commanded them to be the eyes of the world and to watch and guard, even at the brightest time.
The Cannazites
To the Cannazites He gave dominion over the deserts, both cold and warm, and over all desert creature to control and to subdue. And He gave them a great, cold sandy place to govern, and He also gave to them the gift of fire, and He commanded them to make way for the spread of the forest and grassland, but to guard the small creatures under them.
The Mazorites
To the Mazorites He gave the gift of building and crafting; of ship forming and tower raising and wall crafting and all things done by strong means. And He gave them a land full of all that was needful for their work, and He commanded them to help the other men in need and to teach of their skill.

The Eldest

To the Eldest He gave dominion over all things, people, animal, plant, earth, water, and all things, to order all things and to keep them in unity. And he gave them the gift of writing and art and all fine and delicate things. And he gave them the land of gathering, where all the free peoples were to come together and help one another. Them He made the most lovely of face of all creatures, and above all He gave them great wisdom, from which their name comes. He commanded the to not only govern, but serve all things and to order them according to the good of all.

The Shanomle

Over each race Mahvhiy placed a great chief to lead that people and to govern them, but to also have powers greater than the others. These were called the Shanomle, or Princes. Over each of the Amnoon and over the Eldest He put one, but over all the other races He only put one governing each. These He formed first, and He was with them and taught them and stayed with them until He brought them up unto himself. Of them He created the various peoples, and their life is in them to this day. And these are the names of the Shanomle Princes:
Over the Merfolk He placed Honolan, Lord of the Sea, and in him was all the storm and calm of the ocean, and he delved the deeps and raised the island and fed the forest of the sea and the great coral reefs.
Over the Ombers He placed Arulan, Lord of the Plains, and in him was the strength of the great crocodiles and pythons and swamp trees, and in his hand was the gentleness of a gardener, and he put water into the swamps with his might, and with his finger he grew the wild daisies and goldenrod of the field.
Over the Dwarfs He placed Thumnor, Lord of the Mountains, and in him was the sturdiness and endurance of the mountains and of the hard foundations of Kezoo, and he carved the caverns and the tunnels under the earth with long work and he raised the mountains with great strain.
Over the Elves He put the twins Filarion, Lord of the Trees, and Delimra, Lady of the Forest-creatures, and in Filarion was the giving of a birch and the stillness of an oak, and in his face was the light of the sunshine through the leaves, and he caused trees to flourish in his wake and his song made the branches whisper. But in Delimra was the grace of the deer and the boldness of elk, and she cared for all living things, and she was great, but her brother was greater than her and began his work before her.
Over the Haranites He placed Sikia, Lord of the Eagles, and in him was the sight and swiftness of the birds of the air, and he saw many things and watched over the flourishing of Kezoo.
Over the Cannazites He placed Brymion, Lord of the Sands, and in him was the unpredictability and savagery of the wild sandstorms, but also the warmth and heat of a fire, and he subdued the deserts and caused the creatures of the desert to grow and become tough.
Over the Mazorites He placed Huvleo, Lord of Ships, and in him was the skill of a carpentor and a mason and a shipwright and a navigator, and he built large towers and ships and walls and schools for the teaching of other races.
Over the Eldest and over all other races He placed Arhan, Lord of the Shanomle, and in him was all the fairness and beauty of all art and delicate crafts, yet also the sterness of a Lord of many nations and Mahvhiy gave him alone the power to rule over the other Shanomle, and he sat in glory upon his throne which was crafted for him by Mahvhiy, and he held the world in his hand and kept all at peace.
