Takobe
The first place my brain goes to is on the planet Kaa. The underwater residents don't typical wear headgear, but the humanoid residents of the world above have several tiers of headgear.
The headgear you wear determines your status in society.
Lower classes humanoids wear a simple cloth hat. It is a wide brimmed hat, draped with layers of thin fabric. The fabric drops to approximately knee length. The purpose of the headgear is twofold. It is practical, keeping the head dry from the constant rain, and keeps the ceaseless insects from attacking the face and shoulders. The fabric is draped in such a way that it can be pulled aside to allow to face to face conversation, eating, or drinking.
Typically the working class wears darker browns or tans.
High class humanoids wear a similar garment, but naturally, with more embellishment. The top of the hat may be decorated to show the family feathers. The cloth draping the body may be colorful and soft as silk. The exceptionally wealthy purchase enchantments for their Takobes. These can do anything from emenate a pleasant purfume, to creating a breeze in the garment itself, or to make the fabric waterproof.
While these garments serve a practical role in the Kaa societies, they do have a secondary religious aspect to them. They are worn out of defference to the Goddess Kaa, who can bring the burning sun in her displeasure. The robes serve as a symbol of respect. The humid and stifling heat of Kaa can make for layers of fabric to be fairly uncomfortable at times. But to continue to wear the garment when outdoors serves to show an understanding that Kaa can release the burning blue sun on them and effectively wipe out a good chunk of their civilization. Wearing the Takobe may be the only thing that allows you to stay alive long enough to seek shelter.
And naturally, such a phenomenon has gained a religious following. A sect devoting their lives to the appeasement of Kaa. The Takobes that they wear do not drape in a way that can be pulled to the side. They instead have a piece of enchanted cloth sewn seamlessly in front of their faces. This cloth becomes only a dark mist when the bearer brings something to their face, such as food. Another property of the religious garb is it's protective aura. The garb provides a +5 bonus to AC due to it's disconcerting nature. The robe can turn to an impenetrable mist, confusing attackers and providing cover.
This relgious sect is generally regardled in a positive light, and the protective aura of the cloak is something of a legend to the regular population.
