The Twin Paintings

You swing open the vault door and walk in and find yourself in a small room, empty except for two floor-to-ceiling paintings that nearly covered the back wall.
One of them showed a sun rising with vivid colors streaking across the sky as the bright lights skipped across the water, and the other one showed a darkening sunset with bright reds and oranges snaking their way up from the horizon. Between the two was a stone pillar with some strange letters engraved into it, but they don’t appear to be part of any language you recognize.
You look around at the rest of the room, hoping to find more clues for how to move on, but the closest thing you can find are small wave reliefs all along the walls with two ships , one on each side, sailing towards the paintings. As you watch they suddenly begin to move, swaying with the waves before disappearing into the paintings.
Confused, you reach out towards one of them, and your hand goes right through.
