Book One: Attempt One

At the very least, the first book is third-person limited of Alani Ultargin. Most likely, all of these books will be utilizing the same third-person POV.

Protagonists

Alani Ultargin: The young mage who is struggling to learn magic in a world shortly after a civil war, where magi were hunted down and killed for being too dangerous.    Meros Dappleshorn: An ancient elven mage who has successfully passed himself off as a cleric, and spends his time finding and training young magi to control their magic.   Scytheshield: A paladin and veteran who has decided to take a personal journey away from his Holy Order to find his long-lost twin sister. The two of them were separated during the war, and he will do almost anything to find her.   Gale: A fae warrior hiding under a magical disguise, looking to run away from the increasingly unstable faery society, which is on the brink of civil war itself.   Pierce: A drunken dwarf who has been a mercenary for a long time. Despite his alcoholism, he is a valuable fighter, and he's looking to do as much cool shit as possible.   Venadark: A strange maybe-human with legitimately ash-grey skin; she's a well-established mercenary, known for her specialty in finding people who are hiding. This often leads to her second specialty: assassination.

Structure

Exposition

Alani goes into the Mercenary Tavern with Meros, her mentor. They are there to make money and it's the only place in this post-Civil War society where magic is, if not accepted, then at least overlooked. This allows Alani to learn how to control her magic without being actively hunted down, unless the two of them are stupid and get caught by authorities who don't respect or follow the Mercenary Guild.

Rising Action

Alani, Meros, and the rest of our primary protagonists are sent to various jobs to another town, so they travel together. Unfortunately, only a few things are able to get done before there is an attack upon the town. They help out as best as they can, but when they realize that they would not be able to survive this, Alani and Meros find their previous travelling companions and follow them into the forest. Though they get lost, eventually due to Venadark's familiarity with the area, they find another town and another Mercenary Tavern.    During their time in the forest, Scytheshield unofficially hires Venadark to find someone, but he can't pay her to do it until after he gets a few more jobs under his belt, and Pierce (who is an associate of Vena's) challenges her to do something other than the whole lone-wolf routine. Meros and Gale have a conversation that Alani doesn't hear.    The point of this section is that Alani is able to talk to and make a connection with each of the other characters.    Nobody at the Mercenary Tavern blames them for escaping, but they don't get paid. However, a job is presented asking for Vena specifically for a ridiculous amount of money. Because of the time in the forest, Vena is pushed to bring along all the rest of the protagonists.    The job in question is to travel to Jadefog Jungle and retrieve an ITEM of some sort.   They go to the Jadefog, with shenanigans on the way, and talk to the Queen. She is pissed off and refuses to help unless they kill and bring back proof of a betrayer elf who killed her son. They set out to find this elf, and eventually, they do. The elf explains their side of the story, and this makes the majority of the party want to not kill the elf and find another way to get the item from the Queen. However, Vena comes up with a middle ground. Elves are culturally protective of their hair, and no elf would be willing to cut it without dying. If they cut this elf's hair and bring it back to the Queen, they can get the item and not kill the elf.    The elf is not willing to do this, and there is a massive argument. At night, Vena gets the item, wakes everyone up early and says that they have to leave. It's assumed that she cut off the elf's hair anyway and did the trade without telling anyone. She refuses to say which she did, and has a whole ass monologue expositing about how they have a job, and it doesn't matter what they do, so long as they get the job done. They are mercenaries, not heroes.    This is the first moment where Alani actually stands up, and believing that Vena cut off the elf's hair, exposits the importance of working together, especially since they're all on this job, not just Vena. Was there a time limit? No? They could have figured out another solution without doing this terrible thing.    They then make it to the drop-off point, but along the way, Alani has conversations with everyone and they find out what the item does. It's powerful. When they get there, they group decides that they need to figure out if the person who requested this item isn't going to use it to destroy people. Vena resists, but eventually rolls her eyes and allows it to happen.    Turns out, the person they were dropping it off with was somebody that had negatively affected several of them if not all of them, especially Alani and Vena.

Climax

They fight the client, who eventually escapes, but they have the item. Or the villain steals it and escapes with it. Probably the first. Big fight, and they work together during the fight.

Falling Action

During the fight, the villain taunted all of them with personal information. They investigate the area, find a cottage which they raid for a payment about half of what they were promised, alongside a lot of potions and potion ingredients. The emotional climax is when they reveal parts of their backstory that aligns with the villain.   They discuss and character interaction happens.    Also in the cottage, they find a box full of letters, where they find that either this guy was batshit crazy, or he's working with the vengeful god of war, greed, and pride. Scytheshield strongly believes that this is the case; Venadark doesn't.

Resolution

The party reveals parts of their backstory, and Alani leaves the cottage for a breath of air, and she encounters a strange man with tattered white robes and bound in chains. This is the younger brother of the deity that the villain claims to be working for.

Components

Goals

Overall goal: Get the thing and deliver it to the guy.   Alani: Learn as much as she can, prove that she's useful and capable.   Meros: Make sure that Alani doesn't die, and get as many people as possible to help him out with that.   Shield: Find his sister. Whatever it takes, find and reunite with her.   Gale: Get this done and over with - but also make sure that nobody finds out who she is, and also don't get caught by who she's running from.   Pierce: Do as much cool shit as possible so he can maybe feel something.   Vena: Get this over with, and make sure that ALL of her secrets are kept.
