Nightmare Host

The Nightmare Host is the collective name for all creatures that come out of the Nightmare Isle region. It covers a vast variety of Nightmare spawn that ranges from intelligent to the mindless.

Structure

The Nightmare Host is hard to see as anything but unstructured, but in reality follows a standard hierarchy system. It has no ranks but is ruled by the most intelligent Nightmare spawn. On rare occasions a less intelligent spawn can become quite powerful, but usually through pure physical strength.

Public Agenda

The Nightmare Host has no human agenda or purpose, as far as any intelligent creation knows, as far as they know it exists solely to consume and destroy. The Nightmare Hosts true purpose is unknown as it is very hard to study. But some knowledge has been collected over time.   The Nightmare Host is most commonly known and encountered during an event known as the Reaping. It follows no apparent timing structure and occurs rarely, or more commonly depending on unknown circumstances. The Reaping is when the thick mists of the Nightmare Isles stretch out over the Dreadfire and carries with it the Nightmare Host, the spawn of Nightmare. Its mutated spawn are literally the living images of Nightmare, they seek to consume the minds of the living, for they hold more Nightmares and Dreams for the spawn to feed on. The Reaping is repelled by fighting and destroying the spawn of the Nightmare Host, for the mists seem to lose momentum on enough spawn dying.   The Nightmare Host consists of many different Nightmare spawn, some are similar but almost none exactly resemble another, for no Nightmare is ever exactly alike. Many Nightmares are weak singly, but become strong in hordes, some Nightmares are extremely large and powerful. The most truly terrifying Nightmare Spawn are those deemed Nightmare Lords. While the common spawn of the Nightmare Host consist of common Nightmares, the Nightmare Lords are those that truly inspire fear. Powerful in their own right, they augment their power with deadly intelligence, and often control the lesser spawn of the Nightmare Host.   The most well known Nightmare Lord was, according to legend, once an aspiring Pirate Lord. He went by the name of Jolly Roger, the pirate from which pirates named their traditional flags. He was a renowned and infamous pirate, and sought his seat in the Pirate Court. He sought to do so by swindling Blackbeard himself, in a game of cards. Jolly Roger stacked the deck and bribed the dealer, hoping to all but secure an easy victory. But Jolly Roger underestimated Blackbeard, to which most scoff that any sane man would underestimate Blackbeard. Regardless, Blackbeard started the game by shooting the dealer, and bringing in a random. Blackbeard's superior cheating skills then beat out Rogers. Rogers was furious, killed the new dealer, and then tried to take Blackbeard's seat at the court by killing him. Rogers was no match for Blackbeard, as most would have guessed. Blackbeard cut his right arm off and subdued him. Blackbeard took him aboard his ship Hellfire's Revenge, and set off to punish Rogers. Blackbeard sailed to the edge of the Nightmare Isles, and tied up Rogers in a dinghy. He sent the dinghy into the Mists of Nightmare and never looked back.   Many years later in Bildgewater, a sudden mist blew in from the coast. A horde of Nightmare spawn came upon the unsuspecting port, killing many. Blackbeard received news that this wasn't a Reaping and that it stemmed from a single ship offshore, The Betrayer, Jolly Rogers infamous flagship. Blackbeard fought his way to the docks of Bildgewater and there he found an old enemy, Jolly Roger himself, a Nightmare of his former self. Blackbeard defeated Rogers once again, sustaining a devilish scar in the process. Rogers fell back to his ship and retreated. He has plagued the Dread Sea ever since, sailing his Nightmare ship The Betrayer, surrounded by a localized Nightmare Mist.
