Cathedral of Xaeyr

Purpose / Function

The Cathedral of Xaeyr was originally built as a place of worship dedicated to the elven goddess of shadows, Ombra. Shortly after its construction, the cathedral became one of the most holy places to worshipers of Ombra. Now, however, the Cathedral of Xaeyr has fallen into ruin and followers of Ombra believe that it has been cursed. The ruins of the cathedral stand as a landmark that is visible above the canopy of the Hascam Forest.

Alterations

After its initial construction, a massive bell tower was built in the back of the cathedral. The bell was rung every dusk, as the last slivers of light slipped behind the horizon, to call worshipers of Ombra to service.

Architecture

The cathedral is built in a very Gothic style using dark stone and metals. The front entrance is a massive steel door flanked by stone pillars. Their are two smaller towers in the front of the cathedral and a large bell tower in the back, all of which have steep, triangular roofs. The few windows in the cathedral are massive and are made of stained glass of various shades of grey.

History

The cathedral was original built by an apostle of Ombra, the elven cleric Xaeyr. She built the cathedral in the darkest region of the forest that she could find and gathered other followers of Ombra to join her in worship. For hundreds of years, Xaeyr performed services dedicated to Ombra. As she grew older, however, Xaeyr began to grow mad and perform more and more evil rituals in the Cathedral. In the year 641, a mysterious figure cloaked in shadows and wielding a gleaming sword assaulted the cathedral. The figure slaughtered everyone in the cathedral and left it in ruins. Followers of Ombra believe that Xaeyr's evil rituals drew the ire of Ombra on the place and that it is cursed. Now, after many years without care, the cathedral has fallen into disarray and has begun to collapse.
