The Soulstream

In the time of the Five, the Outer Worldlock had sealed the Prime Material from the Outer Planes and the Astral Plane, meaning that souls no longer had an afterlife to achieve after death. With no afterlife, undead wandered the world, ghosts and revenants ran rampant, and the non-necromantic magic of the world had begun to wane in power. The gods had drastically diminished in power, with fewer people worshiping them, and as a result, Deep Magic had become weaker than Shallow Magic.
After defeating the Nelarian Remnant in the Third Nelarian War, the Five realized that the lack of an afterlife was cutting the natural cycle of life and death short. With the Outer Planes sealed away from the Prime Material, and the only route to an afterlife through the Inner Planes fraught with peril, the Five set out to create a safe path for souls to follow to their earned afterlife.
Their actions resulted in the Soulstream; a path through the five elemental planes of Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Lightning (in that order) that was relatively safe. Souls could travel the Soulstream until their will was exhausted; when the soul's will to continue was gone, the soul would dissipate into life energy in whichever plane it currently occupied. This life energy would be recycled back into the Prime Material via the Elemental Nexii, ensuring a continual cycle of energy and closing the loop of life and death.
