Demon

Demons come in multiple ranks, the majority being the most powerful and very mean. They do whatever they can to stir up trouble with other species but tend to be strangely loyal to those above them (typically claiming loyalty to the rank rather than the demon in question). Originally they were human but the group they are descended from established that they were above the average human and devoted their lives to finding any means to live as long as possible and gain power. Presumably only one of the original demons is still alive today.   Imps/Ikkomadobi —imps are lesser demons, not very powerful but masters of mimicry (half-demon and half-fairy). Most don’t bother with other demons or humans and tend to busy themselves with causing basic mischief. As masters of mimicry they can be very lethal when they want to be, imitating the voices and—for the stronger ones—appearances of loved ones or rivals, leading their targets astray most often to their death. Imps are not born with a set sex—though some choose to take one later in life—as such they do not have reproductive organs and are incapable of reproducing.   Kappa —kappa are water demons, somewhere in the mid-range of the ranks of demons. They attack any creature that dares venture too close to the water they reside in—including other demons, oftentimes drowning them though sometimes killing them while still on land and then devouring the soul. They are also fiercely polite so if a creature bows to them they will automatically bow in return, spilling the water from the top of their head, rendering them immobile until the water is returned; if the creature is the one to replace the water they are bound to serve them for eternity. They tend to love cucumbers.   Sirens —sirens are mid-range demons, slightly more powerful than kappa and predominantly female. In appearance, they appear very similarly to sakami (both being bird-like in form) though in action they tend to be more demonic. Kappa and sirens make territory boundaries between the two species and both prefer to drown their prey and (presumably) devour their souls.   Changelings —changelings are lesser demons who kidnap small children, ranging in age from 3 years up to 12 years, and take the form of the child in order to kill the remaining family members and (presumably) take their souls. Usually the changeling will devour the child’s soul but occasionally it will leave the child to wander in the forest or take it back to the demon village to be used for other purposes.   Jikininki/Shokujinki —jikininki/shokujinki are lesser demons who feed on corpses.   Nightmares —nightmares are lesser demons (possibly the spirits of deceased demons) who cause night terrors in humans. They are mainly mischievous and aren’t really threats to humans.   Familiars —familiars are lesser demons who take on the forms of animals in order to help humans. They are looked down on in the demon ranks and often become the unfortunate victims of cruelty from every other demon, including other lowly ranked demons. They are typically pacifistic in nature.
