Knights of the Realm

An independent order of honorable knights who protect the lands of Jemmora from all manner of threats. They work with local governments, militias, and guards as an elite support force.   The order has a very hierarchical structure based out of Stormwatch Keep, on the border between Dremenot and Khazdal. Orders are disseminated from the High Council through the chain of command down to knights and squires.   The Knights of the Realm are an ideal group for characters interested in chivalry, honor, and martial skill.

Structure

Interested individuals can apply with a knight to become their squire, should that knight have a current opening. That knight becomes a mentor, teaching the squire about the Oath and Order.   Upon joining, a squire is sworn into service under a knight. The squire’s duties include caring for the knight’s equipment, belongings, and horses.   Squire
Prerequisite: Acceptance into the Knights of the Realm   You gain one higher-ranked contact within the Knights, whom you serve and learn from. You also gain access to strongholds and garrisons of the Knights, who provide lodging and food.   Your salary at this rank is enough to maintain a modest lifestyle, including private quarters in a local garrison.   Rank 1: Knight
Prerequisite: Renown 3+ in the Knights of the Realm, Pass the Trial of Oath and Order   At this rank, you gain some authority over lower-ranking soldiers. When you undertake a mission on the order's behalf that requires military strength, a squad of 1d4 soldiers accompanies and assists you for the duration of the mission.   You are also able to requisition nonmagical weapons, armor, and equipment for official order business.   Bear Knight (Special Role)
Prerequisite: Renown 5+ in the Knights of the Realm, 5th level or higher   These knights are mounted on cave bears and patrol the wild lands of Jemmora, keeping an eye out for monsters or threats lurking outside civilization. If you meet the prerequisites, you can become a knight of the bear, assuming no official objects. You are assigned a cave bear to use as a mount when carrying out your responsibilities. Using the bear for personal matters is a gross violation of the Oath and Order.   Rank 2: Templar
Prerequisite: Rank 1 and Renown 10+ in the Knights of the Realm   As a templar, you are responsible for missions and strategies that require a sizable coordinated force.   You lead a company that consists of six squads, each made up of three soldiers commanded by a knight. If you are also a bear knight, at least one of these squads is made up of other bear knights, which are soldiers mounted on cave bears. You can assign these squads to tasks of your choosing within the area of the city where you have authority. You can also lead these soldiers into battle yourself, or bring one squad and its sergeant with you on a guild mission.   At this rank, you also gain access to the Sacred Cloisters, which contain holy relics and shrines to Kodava.   You continue to receive a salary sufficient to maintain a modest lifestyle, but your quarters in the garrison are more spacious.   Rank 3: Commander
Prerequisite: Rank 2 and Renown 25+ in the Knights of the Realm   As a captain in the Knights of the Realm, you gain command of a small garrison and the responsibility for protecting people in your region and supporting local guards as needed. You have four companies under your command. You also have a personal retinue of three knights.   You regularly receive communications from the Knights' Council, who coordinates the efforts of the smaller garrisons. They keep you informed of the goals and concerns of the order and can help you address them. You are then responsible for giving orders to your templars, and you must answer to your highlord for the troops’ success or failure in achieving the order's strategic goals.   As a commander, your salary allows you to maintain a comfortable lifestyle between adventures.   Rank 4: Highlord
Prerequisite: Rank 3 and Renown 50+ in the Knights of the Realm   You hold a seat on the Knights’ Council, able to vote on matters of the Oath and Order.   As a highlord, you assume the leadership of one of the major garrisons of the Knights of the Realm and hold a seat on the Knights' Council. In this position, you may be tasked with the coordination of large numbers of troops, alliances and initiatives with nations or major factions, and advising heads of state.   You continue to draw a salary sufficient to maintain a comfortable lifestyle.
