Waltor Windbeak

The reporters didn't follow, they seemed to be too caught up with the alien spaceship in the lawn of the church. A few minutes pass in silence as they stroll back to the palace. Finally Rijer speaks “My liege, forgive my asking but what does this mean for your reign?” Waltor doesn't respond for a long time. He looks around at the buildings of his kingdom and see’s the marvels he helped usher and his fellow Kenku's walking next to Elves in equality. He then looks over to Rijer.   “It means this may be the beginning of its end.”

Personal history

Born 45 years before the Day of Spaceships in the slums of the Voxian nation of Aderran, Waltor Windbeak always strived for happiness. His mother had died during childbirth and so was raised by his father who owned a well known meadery in the slums. Aderran was a city in which the populace was divided by race. The higher class citizens were the ancient elves (who themselves were a minority back in those days as opposed to the current state of elf superiority following the rise of the Voxian Church) who had an abundance of privilege, education, and wealth. On the other hand were the Kenku's. These people were viewed as a race below the status of vermin. As such they were rounded up and unofficially contained in a small stretch of the city that became known as "The Coop."   Waltor's childhood was more fortunate than others of his age due to his fathers meadery "The Windbeak Meadery." It is because of this he could avoid being a beggar like the other children and instead worked hard in the meadery and learned the craft so he could take over for his father one day. This however did not help him avoid the discrimination and abuse from the elves who would occasionally come down to "The Coop" to beat up and abuse the Kenku's, or Crows as they called them. The worst ones were the students from the Arcanum since they were especially cruel and held their status and power above the heads of everyone else.   At the age of 23 Waltor was still helping his father but had learned much of the craft and on occasion would be allowed to create his own brews. His father would sell Waltor's brews during the holiday seasons and they would sell like hotcakes. One time during the holiday celebrations 3 Arcanum students had snuck into the meadery and began roughing up some "dirty crows." Waltor was scrawny and lacked any true fighting ability and so he could only stand by and watch. Then something happened, something unorthodox. One of the students began to try and stop the other two. She was mocked and teased as a "Crow Lover" but they stopped and continued down the street to incite cruelty elsewhere. Waltor helped one of the injured up and pulled a bottle off the shelf. Then for the second time that night something extraordinary happened. The bottle began to glow in Waltor's hand. The mead was infused with magical energy and when the bloodied kenku drank this strange mead his wounds began to close. Everyone stood in awe at this development, even the Arcanum student. She walked over to Waltor and asked him how he, a crow, could perform magic. Waltor, afraid of what she might do, just replied with the truth. He did not know. The woman smiled and put her hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry I wont tell." She held out her hand "I'm Jane."   Over the course of the next couple of years Jane would sneak back to the meadery regularly to share with Waltor the lessons she learned that day as well as teaching him to speak common. As his arcane knowledge increased so did the bond between him and Jane. It wasn't long before their feelings for each other bubbled to the surface and the two fell for each other. It would be impossible for them to make their relationship public due to societal times. So as an unofficial way of tying the knot they performed a ritual together. They met in the attic of the meadery as they always did and joined hands. Together their magical energies flowed between them and mingled in the air until they became one. The spoke the incantation together and their voice complemented each other into something harmonious. Then in between them a small fey weasel was summoned. This weasel would be named Gilgamore.   As tensions began to rise between Kenku and Elves, as the Kenku began to protest their unequal treatment, Waltors visits with Jane would become sparser. Gilgamore would run messages between the two but it was only once a week that Waltor would sneak into the Arcanum to be with his beloved. He was 25 years old when the two lost each other. A turn of fate would cause an Arcanum guard to deviate from his route and catch Waltor climbing into Jane's window. It wasn't long before the guards broke down the door and began shooting the devious crow as he fled out the window. Waltor was very injured from a bolt to the calf and was captured. What Jane had neglected to mention was that her father, Leopold, was the Magistrate of the Arcanum and Waltors "infiltration" into his daughters room was a terrible crime. Jane was placed under heavy guard and Waltor was sent to jail.   A few days after his arrest, Waltor's fellow kenku came to break him out. Waltor knew that his escape would be noticed instantly and that he'd have to be quick. As he reached the outer walls of the Arcanum the alarm bells began to ring. Waltor sprinted and hid amongst alleys dodging patrols. As he reached The Coop he saw the unimaginable. The Windbeak Meadery was in flames and surrounded by guards and Leopold forcing his chained daughter to watch it burn. Waltor used his magic to get inside. He had to find his father but it was too late. His father and been stabbed and left to die and be crushed by the Meadery he spent his life running. As he lay there dying he told Waltor to grab the recipe book and flee the city. With tears in his eyes he complied with his fathers dying wish. Waltor took one last look out the meadery window at Jane, struggling and crying, then ran out the back. As he left the city gates, running for his life, Gilgamore ran beside him.   The next few years of his life are poorly documented. He was accused some months later of kidnapping a prince of Barria, Rikard Kasdeya, but this would later be cleared by Rikard who said he ran away with Waltor and the two went on great adventures and that he even taught Waltor a more refined version of Common. Afterwards Waltor had joined another adventuring party that notably freed a small town in the swamplands from the grips of a hag and discovered an ancient city known as Hacarta. But all the while he sent letters to his beloved in secret, keeping her informed of his adventures. Her writing and support would fuel his desire to increase his arcane power and return to fight for kenku equality.   *It should be noted that it was also around the time of discovering Hacarta that Waltor had his first brush with death. He was revived by a town cleric and members of his party reported that he began a side project that strived for immortality.   It would be five years until Waltor returned to Aderran. After currying favors with wizards he met in his travels and acquiring a wealth of arcane knowledge Waltor arranged a meeting with Magistrate Leopold. With the support of the notable wizards of Voxia Waltor challenged Leopold for his seat as Magistrate. With the backing of the entire populace of The Coop Leopold had no choice but to accept the duel. The halls of the Arcanum were saturated in magic as the two battled it out flinging spells at one another. Waltor using his usual Mead Bottle technique in which all the spells would flow around him like liquid. Leopold was more of a traditionalist, using only a wand made from dragon bone and heartwood. The battle raged on for nearly an hour but with a misty step and a shocking grasp Waltor was victorious. Jane, who had been watching from the sidelines, ran up to Waltor and hugged him in a loving embrace that could last a lifetime. Waltor had spared Leopold but the former Magistrate refused to remain at the Arcanum if it were to be ran by a crow and he went into self imposed exile. That evening Waltor and Jane were married on the Arcanum steps, uniting the two societies of Aderran and becoming Waltor Windbeak and Jane C. Windbeak, Co-Magistrates of the Arcanum.   After the wedding the city was never the same. Waltor made it his personal mission to raise the kenku people to equal status with the elves. Under his leadership as Magistrate he would set the precedent for the acceptance of Kenku's into Arcanum rosters. He would also advise the king on societal matters as well as arcane ones.   His leadership as Magistrate would last for ten years. The king fell ill to and died, though some would theorize that foul play was involved but nothing was ever confirmed. With no heirs or clear line of succession the matter of the kings replacement was left to a vote amongst the populace. Waltor had no intentions of ruling and was quite content with his life with Jane. However, in a surprise turn of events Waltor was chosen by the people and became the new ruler of Aderran.   His reign would be glorified in the annals of history for many years to come. He brought equality and prosperity to the nation and for a brief time in his reign the city of Aderran was the capital of the planet. It was not all greatness though as his reign would be constantly marred by a new religious movement The Church of Voxia and their New Gods.   In 0 AE fate would twist its way around in Waltors life once more. Kenku scouts from The Library of Lumenarres on Salavaria led by the Aaracockra scholar Davenrou landed in Aderran, in front of The Voxian Church. This provided the church with the platform and influence amongst the populace to rise to power as the people lost faith in Waltors leadership. This happening of course due to the press and manipulations of the church as well as the fact that Waltor and Davenrou did not get along and Davenrou was not secretive about his feelings towards Waltor's leadership.   After 3 months Waltor and Jane were ousted from rulership as the planet began to shift to a Theocracy under the Voxian Church. Waltor and Jane would find work back at the Arcanum as teachers instead of Magistrates since even its system of leadership had changed into one controlled by priests and church officials. The two would work there until 9 AE when the planet of Zakatash was discovered. After some consideration they boarded a vessel that smuggled people to other planets. Them along with their former royal advisor Rijer and Nazkul (the ancestor of current Zakatash ruler Nazkul) traveled to the planet and began creating a life for themselves.   The four became good friends and created a good life for themselves. Nazkul would become a smuggler and would transport books and other goods back to the other three. Rijer became a well renowned Doctor and would go on to open up his own practice. Jane would immerse herself in the knowledge and discoveries of new planets made by the Voxian-Salavaria Federation (VSF.) She was arguably the greatest amateur historian in the galaxy at the time. Waltor would restart the Windbeak Meadery which, much like it once was, became quite popular amongst the populace and is still running to this day.   In 25 AE the planet of T'Salizar was discovered by Janice Garza (Ancestor of current Commander Garza of Redwatch.) This planet would capture the fascination of Jane. An entire planet whose history and people locked themselves away from the galaxy. For the next 4 years Jane would request information from the VSF and Redwatch about the planet, acquiring quite a wealth of satellite photos and a multitude of varied perspectives of Janice Garza's first and only encounter with the Thri-Keen. In 29 AE she found in one of the satellite photos what appeared to be the outline of a temple. It could not have been Thri-keen due to its distance from their mountain hives. Waltor didn't know what to make of it but seeing the excitement in her eyes he knew he had to help her. This is the woman he loves and he'd do anything for her. Plus she'd do it without him anyways so why not be a part of it? For the next year the four of them would plan their expedition and the sneaking onto the planet. At the age of 75 Waltor and his wife along with their two best friends went to T'Salizar in hopes of finding something extraordinary. They did, but at the cost of their lives.   The following incident is recorded in the article about the Temple of the Broken Sun on the timeline in 30 AE. The group had discovered an ancient temple buried in the sand that proved the existence of a humanlike race that predated the Thri-Keen. However, Waltor and Jane perished in a battle with a temple guardian infected with the deadly Crystolkinesis Virus. Dr. Rijer and Nazkul escaped and told their story.   Waltor Windbeak is immortalized by statue at the central park of The Coop and the couple have busts in the Arcanum library as well as wings of the library named after them. Waltor Windbeak has unfortunately been marred by the Voxian Church as a cruel tyrant that oppressed the freedom of religion and such lessons are still taught in Voxian schools today. It is only through the personal journal of Jane Windbeak published under her middle name "Cassia" that we get the true story of this most influential ruler.       * 1021 Addendum: During the trial of Bor Borson V. Jaxxian Galaxy he and his fellow adventurers claimed that Waltor Windbeak is alive through dark magic (Likely a result of his side project into immortality back in his youth) and actively attempting to bring about the end of the galaxy.   Addendum not for public viewing; Authenticity of statement remains in question.

Education

Waltor Windbeak was trained in arcane arts by Jane C. Windbeak and various teachers on his youthful adventures. He has also received education in craft alcohol and a teaching license from the Arcanum in Aderran on Voxia in the year 1 AE.

Employment

Waltor Windbeak has worked the majority of his life as an owner of Windbeak Meadery. Though he was also a Magistrate at the Arcanum for 10 years and King of Aderran for 5 years.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Waltor had learned magic from his future wife Jane C. Windbeak which would lead to his taking over as a Magistrate in Aderran and eventually King. Afterwards he was a professor of arcane arts at the Arcanum and would then be smuggled into Zakatash and become one of the first inhabitants of the planet that was not a native. His final proven achievement was aiding in the discovery of the Temple of the Broken Sun.

Failures & Embarrassments

With great success comes failure. Waltor lost his father when the Windbeak Meadery burned down in -20 AE. He also lost his throne when he was pushed out by the Voxian Church in the wake of The Day of Spaceships.

Mental Trauma

The loss of his parents due to outside causes likely made him overly protective of his loved ones. During his reign many who worked at the Opulent Palace would claim that he cared not for anything but those he loved and that if something were to happen to Queen Jane C. Windbeak they couldn't even conceive of what he would do.

Morality & Philosophy

Waltor Windbeak was rumored to have an unhealthy obsession in the sciences. According to reports from his adventuring group from his twenties he would often neglect ethical boundaries in the pursuit of human biological enhancement.   More official, Waltor was well known as a champion for equality and was reported to on many occasions be for Galactic Equality amongst all races. Likely due to his discrimination as a child.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Waltor was always motivated by his love for his wife. She was "The light of his life and without her nothing else in this galaxy matters."

Social

Religious Views

Waltor Windbeak was a staunch believer in the philosophical concept of Determinism. He often believed that his life followed a storyline that was already planned out and he got lucky in what that story was. It is not hard to imagine if he were still alive he may be a follower of the entity known as The Writer.

At the time of his death Waltor Windbeak had an estate worth 30 million GP in todays money.
