Kai ('Kai)

Kitsuka Kai (a.k.a. Kai)

Introduction

Kitsuka Kai - Status: One of the main characters.   Kitsuka Kai is one of the nine Soldiers . Despite his first name being Kitsuka, he refuses to go by it as it resurfaces memories of his time in the Compound. Given Kai's rather... stubborn personality, the gods were unable to keep his soul in the same hibernation state the rest of the soldiers were kept in. As a result, he was left in the Second Sphere indefinitely, without mentally or physically ageing until the rest of the soldiers were acquired. The trauma that Kai endured in the Second Sphere, watching the few people he had grown to love die in front of him, created serious resentment and hatred against the very same Gods that kept him alive. It was here, in this fevered mental state where his primary goal emerged --- to kill the Gods himself. His extended lifetime, however, has yielded certain positive side effects. Either due to his hatred towards the Gods or pure boredom (dealer's choice), Kai became incredibly skilled in throwing knives, shamshirs, and the magic abilities he possesses. While he hardly ever uses magic in public areas, his skill is remarkable. If he so wished, Kai could very well hold his own against a God. And --- he may even win.

Personality -

Kai is a sociopath. He can be incredibly manipulative, and, for the most part, cares very little who gets hurt from his actions. He fears abandonment, and for years believes that the only way someone would ever willingly stay by his side was if they believed they had nowhere else to go. That they needed him just as much as he needed them. Even throughout all of this, to say Kai cared much for the people he kept around him would be giving the man more credit than he probably deserved. Quite simply, he had little empathy or care for those around him and, often, could become verbally abusive to those who were around him when he became temperamental. This treatment extended to the general public as well. Using his emotionally stunted state to his advantage, Kai would do whatever it would take to provide for himself with little remorse. Breaking the limbs of his victims (or, in more severe cases, removing them), he was able to get whatever he wanted and would leave without any remorse. Despite a rather grandiose self image though, Kai still harboured resentment and hatred toward himself. Over time, this led to self-harm and numerous suicide attempts. His realisation upon not being able to die yet, as the Gods still had power of his life caused even more hatred towards them. This animosity and hostility would continue to grow and cloud his judgment, leaving him with the only perceived options to get rid the these feelings being to take it out on others or himself. In short, he's vindictive, resentful, manipulative, and cruel. All of these traits manifesting in the undeveloped mind of a fifteen-year-old boy who didn't know these qualities were unusual or even bad.   Upon spending years with the rest of the soldiers, Kai's initial feelings of pure hatred and anger towards them begin to dissipate. No longer being the only one in the room with trauma, his previous isolationist lifestyle gradually goes away, revealing a more accurate depiction of who Kai is as a person. He still defaults back to his earlier manipulative tendencies, yet he genuinely tries to forgo them. Finally understanding that his past behaviour was unacceptable, he begins to heal. In their place, his fierce devotion and sometimes overwhelming protectiveness shows itself, as he at last finds people he wants to become better for. Even so, he isn't "fixed" as many would like to call it. He still internalises resentment and lashes out against others. He's still emotionally immature and impulsive. He still works tirelessly to bring death upon the Gods he so hates. Finally, however, he becomes more than it all.    Kai is adventurous, brave, and determined. He's also unreliable, impulsive, and dishonest. He's complicated, and it's best that others should see him that way.   CLARIFICATION - Kai is someone with ASPD, or sociopathy. Not all sociopaths are bad people or even dangerous. Kai is, but just he himself. This is not a statement on all sociopathic people, nor how they should be treated. Sociopaths are often victims of severe trauma and should not be shunned, they didn't choose to be who they are. Thank you.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Kai is relatively fit and strong, leaving him to be able to perform feats most children his age would not be able to. He also has the ability to be quite flexible and agile, able to contort himself into whatever position is needed for either his heists or his abilities. He is generally on the thinner and leaner side, lacking any obvious muscle tone.

Body Features

Kai's whole body is incredibly scared, with most of the scarring being around the torso. Due to the extreme injuries he acquired from his first death, there is a deep divot in his chest from where the arrow pierced him, barely missing his heart.  From this puncture wound there is severe scarring branching out and covering almost all of his chest. He also has burn scars and self harm scars covering his upper arms and wrists.

Facial Features

Kai's eyes are monolid, with thick, downturning eybrows and short eyelashes. He has a rather sharp and pointed jawline, similar to perhaps a heart or diamond shaped face. Despite the pointed features, he has soft cheekbones and his eyebrows are rounded out at the ends, giving his general face a softer look.

Identifying Characteristics

Kai's face and body are incredibly scarred, leaving him to be easily noticed in a crowd. One specific facial scar starts from his upper lip and carries up his face, nearly avoiding his left eye.

Special abilities

Kai's magic abilities are by far the most powerful out of anyone's on his team. His abilities include being able to manipulate any rock, earth, metal, or stone to his will. This is only the case, however, if said element is naturally occurring in nature. Any alloy, such as stainless steal for example, he is unable to manipulate since it is a mix of two metals and not a singular one. In his most powerful attacks later on in the series, he is able to trap an entire army in the rock under their feet, and cares out divots through entire mountains.

Specialized Equipment

Kai's equipment consist of several types of blades, as using blades is his main fighting style. The two blades that he uses the most are throwing knives and the shamshir. As for alterations made to the blades, Kai's shamshir contains two extra quillons to form a x-shaped cross guard. Both the throwing knives and the shamshir were created with the intended use to be mainly used against magic attacks, able to cut through energy blasts and are relatively fire resistant. They are however still sharp enough to be used in normal combat.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Kai was born to a family of two parents, he suspects he was the only child. At the age of three, he was taken from his family by Compound Forces and was raised in the Compound. He was then subjected to unimaginable horrors during his twelve years there. While living at the Compound, Kai formed a bond with a friend by the name of Myko, and later developed feelings for him. The feelings, thankfully for Kai, were reciprocated. They began a relationship. When Mike returned one night beaten half-to-death after being denied medical care, Kai decided that he would escape the Compound with Myko no matter what. This had never been done before, nor had any student ever thought of doing such a thing, it was seen as impossible. Over the next few months, Kai spent every hour he could devising a plan with Myko to escape. Finally, when the day came, Myko backed out due to fear of being killed. Kai didn't want to force him, and ultimately decided he would escape on his own and come back for Myko. Kai, miraculously, was able to fight and kill every single guard that surrounded Compound Exit C. The death tole was dozens. It was suspected that Kai, during the fight, became a temporary vessel for one of the Gods, explaining the enormous amount of power and magic he was able to create. After escaping the Compound walls Kai fled for the mountains, hoping for cover. He never made it. He was struck down by a cursed arrow that missed his heart barely, and died of blood loss in the snow. Myko died as a result of his injuries several years later, in his early twenties.   Kai, due to his immense power, has unable to be held in a hibernating state until the rest of the team was formed, so his soul was sent to the Second Sphere, where he would remain for the next century, never ageing. He would only begin to age again after his team arrived in the Second Sphere, decades later. Kai refused to have any relationships with anybody to prevent them from being hurt, yet this failed. Several years after his departure to the Second Sphere, he met Gaeia, the person he loved the most. It was never romantic, but Kai grew such a bond with Gaeia that he pledged his soul to Death under the promise that if any harm ever came to Gaeia and her family, that he would be their sole protector and he would get hurt instead. Gaeia became his only reason to live. Years later, he acquired a second reason to live, Gaeia's daughter, Ruby. Ruby was named after Kai's favourite stone. Gaeia died not long after due to health complications, she didn't even reach fifty. Kai, determined that Ruby would never get hurt, pleated his soul again, but to Gaeia this time, as she lay on her death bed. She asked him to protect Ruby with his life, and he agreed. This promise fell through. Merely ten years after the birth of Ruby's child, a girl called Rose, Ruby died in a horse accident. One that could have been easily prevented. Kai then dedicated his life to Rose, promising to raise her as best he could. Rose became a doctor specialising in the care of magically inflicted wounds, and Kai helped her in this practice. By the time Rose reached old age, the team came along. Kai had to watch her die at the age of seventy-six. Rose left behind no children of her own. Kai then joined the team, and that is where our story starts.

Gender Identity

Kai identifies as the male gender, yet does enjoy trying traditionally feminine things such as eyeliner and skirts. He has no care in what gender people view him as, he's comfortable in his own identity.

Sexuality

Kai identifies as gay and demi-romantic. More specifically, he is not just attracted to men. Kai can be attracted to non-binary identifying people as well, and those who do identify partly on the feminine spectrum. This can be shown by his current partner, Aki, who occasionally identifies as female. In Kai's eyes, as long as they do not always identify as somewhere on the feminine spectrum, he is open to a relationship. He's also demi-romantic, meaning he needs a stong emotional bond to form any romantic attraction to anybody.

Education

Kai was educated in the Compound. He was taught advanced writing, reading, and math skills as a result of his education. However, the main focus of the Compound was on Kai's magic abilities. Being the strongest student in all of the Compound, there was an immense amount of attention on his abilities, leaving him an incredibly skilled user. He continued his magic education after his death in the Second Sphere, and after practicing for ninety-eight years, he became a foe worthy of fighting the Gods.

Employment

After being relocated to the Second Sphere, Kai's first attempts at any jobs failed him. The different careers he took up in the early years of his life in the Second Sphere are too numerous to mention. Eventually, however, he fell into a steady job as a thief. Pickpocketing, stealing from market stands, breaking into buildings, none of it was out of his skill set. He continues this career on and off after meeting the rest of his team, eventually giving it up permanently after he begins his relationship with Aki.

Mental Trauma

Kai's trauma mainly comes from two places, the Compound and the Second Sphere. In the Compound, Kai and the rest of the students there were treated as sub-human. The meals were only enough to support them physically, giving only the strict amount of calories the officials decided that the students should need. If a teacher decided that the students was not giving the ideal performance, they would retaliate by either hitting and punching the student to breaking their limbs in several places. The wounded student would not be allowed to seek medical care after such an incident, and would be forced to go back to their work and compete on the same level as the rest of their classmates, no matter the injuries they sustained. If the student failed to do so, greater and greater punishments would be dealt to the student, sometimes killing them in the process. The school days were ten hours and the work days where they did their jobs around the compound would be another eight hours. As a result of this, Kai was left severely traumatised after he left the Compound.    As for the Second Sphere, Kai refused to become attached to anyone, yet this guard fell quickly after meeting Gaeia. The two formed a bond so strong that Kai would end up vowing on Death that he would protect her and her family. This bond would last until Gaeia's death almost fifty years later. After her death, Kai was put in charge of her daughter, Ruby, who he then promised to protect her with his life, again. He failed to keep this promise, leaving Ruby to die from a horse accident when she was only forty. Finally, Kai was left to raise Ruby's daughter, Rose. Rose refused to have any children, and so Kai and Rose spent most walking hours together. Eventually, Kai was stripped of this again one final time when she passed away at the age of seventy-six. With the only people Kai ever cared about were constantly dying while he remained his same age ended up breaking him and leaving him to hurt and attempt to severely maim anybody he thought was getting too close.

Morality & Philosophy

More or less, his original philosophy was that if anyone harmed him, he would repay that a hundred fold. And if anyone treated him well, he would be completely indifferent towards them, whether they live or die, he did not care.  Later on, he still kept the first part of his original philosophy, that he would harm anyone who harmed him, but he changed the secondary part to helping anyone who treated him well.    As for his morality, Kai views very few things as immoral. He does not care how bad he hurts someone for the most part. He does however refuse to kill anyone, ever (Except for the gods, he wants to kill them). He cares little if someone else wants to kill anybody, yet he will never kill anyone unless it is the ONLY choice. If there is even a chance he would be able to get away without murder, no matter how small, he will take it. He hates the thought of killing anyone.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

His motivation is simple, to kill the Gods and become the sole ruler of the Spheres.

Likes & Dislikes

Kai likes very few things, and hates a lot of things. He's generally not very pleasant to be around. The main source of his hatred are the Gods, as he blames them for everything wrong that has happened in his life. As for what he does like, he's a fan of bread. He likes bread a lot. No specific reason, he just thinks it tastes good.

Vices & Personality flaws

Kai is an incredibly manipulative character. He also lacks the empathy and sympathy required to feel any sort of guilt for the majority of his actions. He has no care for how he harms others, an example being how he attempted to cut of Maytee's ear in their first interaction since he suspected her of stealing his food. He enjoys feeling in power of the people around him, especially when they seem terrified of him.

Social

Social Aptitude

Although Kai certainly has the ability to be socially adept with his incredibly skills of manipulation, he refuses to for the most part. Even though he presents himself as kind, it is usually to achieve an ulterior motive, such as teaching someone a lesson or to get close enough to steal from them. Sometimes both. With his explosive anger however, many attempts at being social fall apart to pieces.

Speech

Kai tends to be quite loud when he speaks. His anger issues make him prone to shouting and his mouth is far from clean, often using creative obscenities. Despite the fact he's been around for many decades, his brain being young allows him to easily conform to new turns of phrases and slang. His vocabulary, though, is one of the largest of his group, making him able to speak incredibly eloquently.

Wealth & Financial state

Kai is not incredibly wealthy. The only house he owns at the start of the story was an old shepards house that he aquired for free, and even then he still needs to steal to get food on the table. Later on however, he is able to provide for an actual, stable, house. Albeit, the money has questionable origins.
