Rakvith

Rakvith is a large flowering grassy non-woody stemmed plant growing roughly three feet in height when in bloom. When wintering over, it looks like little more than a clump of yellowish green tufted grass. When in spring in full bloom, it sprouts a tall stem out of the middle of the grassy clump about a thumb's width in diameter and roughly two and a half to three feet in height, upon which a single large flower sits. The flower is red with orange streaks running down each petal to the center, and it has a few dozen petals, always in a multiple of three, that grow in three concentric rings out from the center with the largest on the outside. In the middle, the flower has multiple (pollen stalks) that carry a bright yellow pollen. It produces a sweet nectar that birds and insects alike find irresistible.   The sap of the flower stem of the rakvith plant is commonly used as a salve for injuries, its antibacterial properties aiding quick healing. More uncommonly, the leaves can be pounded into a pulpy mixture and used as a glue-like substance applied to a larger injury to staunch bleeding, but this only tends to work well with fresh leaves, and thus has less use in an apothecary's shop and more use out in the field in an emergency.   The petals of the rakvith flower have a sweet, lightly tangy flavor and can be used in culinary dishes as an eye-catching garnish. Some chefs have attempted to use the nectar as a sweetener, but due to the difficulty of storing the nectar long term it is usually found that a better option is to use the petals to flavor honey, or to keep a large garden to feed the nectar to bees and obtain the taste in that manner.   It has been hypothesized that drinking a tea of the rakvith root can aid mana production, but results have been anecdotal and prove difficult to study in a laboratory setting. Nonetheless, the flavor is sufficient that it is often still used as an ingredient in areas where rakvith grows.
