Gawain is the ruler of the Blackguard clan and is also the leader of the Black Riders a group of hunters with the undead as their prey, though they do not hunt those that do not hurt the living. Sir Gawain is one of the last god made Death Knights since he was cursed to wander eternally the realm of Shadow until he redeems himself.
During the fall of Lightguard, their patron god Tyr god of justice became one of the fallen and when he did he started to tell the people of Lightguard to do completely different things. This was a problem for both the paladins and the clerics. Since they couldn't get their spellcasting back most of them started doing what their god said. However, a few paladins stuck to the old ways and Gawain was among them though he was the only squire to stick to the old ways mainly because his master did. He was a much older paladin. In a fit of anger, Tyr turned them all into Death Knights and banished them to the Shadowfell. Luckily for Gawain, his mentor came with him. They would remain in the Shadowfell for two-thousand years.
Both Gawain and his mentor stayed on the move and interacted a lot with the denazins of the Shadowfell and sold their services for food, shelter and warmth. Gawains power gruw til he was eaquel to his mentor. When they neared the end of their second milenia they set up a home base. It was located in the ruins of the Lightguard Kingdom. However when Orcus the deamon prince of undeath attacked suddenly Gawains master fell in combat but something unexpected happened to Orcus. Sir Gawain wounded Orcus and this allowed Gawain to travel back to the Metirial Plane were he would form the Black Riders and take over the Blackguard clan.
