Topaz Spider Silk

Protection for Elven Sorcerers

Elven spellcasters hide in delicate silk robes from spells thrown haphazardly their way. The color shimmers for a moment as a spell connects with the silk, its power quickly reflected back towards the one who dared harm the Elf. These robes are a last defense, one of the great secrets that the Elves hide from other races. A secret that can be found nowhere else in the world except for in a building surrounded by Sorcerers and magic.   The Topaz Spider is an artificial creation of the Unending Scroll created to spin magical silk that when woven into cloth can enhance any enchantments that are placed upon it, whether offensive or defensive. The creation of both the spider and the silk takes the utmost skill and patience, a job that is left to a variety of casters and others at the Unending Scroll. It is believed that this material can only be enchanted or manipulated by Elves, but it is possible that even Silver Elves and Wanderer Elves have the ability to use the silk due to its odd magic.   The inspiration for the Topaz Spider and its special silk came from the artificial creatures created by the Silver Elves. Jade Spiders were created as magical protectors of Káto and the tunnels and caverns that often surround Silver Elf cities. Using a similar process, the Elves created the Topaz Spiders, but instead of specializing in size and durability, the Scholars focused on creating a rare but useful silk, something that could not be found in the natural world but that would benefit from the inherent magic of the Elven Forest.   Choosing the color of the spider was a conscious decision as the Scholars of the Unending Scroll wished to create a material that would be different than the deep purples of the Jade Elves and the earthen tones of the Emerald Elves. The golden color that often dipped into blues and tans was meant to be noticed easily if used on the battlefield. Meant to glow and shimmer like a gem, the color-changing silk fit well with the other fabrics used by the Elves but its warm golden hue often set it apart as an implement of strong casters.

Properties

Material Characteristics

The silk created by the Topaz Spider often ranges from a golden color to a deep blue and can be iridescent due to the innate magic of the material. Nearly indestructible through magical means, this silk enhances all magic placed upon an object created from it, whether offensive or defensive and can cause Spells cast as the silk to rebound to the original caster.   While the majority of the silk's characteristics are known, Scholars at the Unending Scroll have found the subsequent creations of Topaz Spiders have caused the silk to gain a variety of new characteristics over time, including the ability to handle higher level magic, possible manipulation by those of a fey descent, and other properties. It is believed that the spiders and the silk are evolving over time due to the inherent magic of the Elven Forest.

Geology & Geography

This material can only be found at the Unending Scroll or amongst specific traders and manufacturers that have been granted access to the material. Rarely do items created from this material spread beyond the walls of Alfensil as it is seen as a rare material that is utilized only for the most important of spellcasters.

Life & Expiration

In the nearly 500 years of study of this material, no evidence has been found that magic applied to the silk will ever decay and the material itself will never cease to hold magic. It is possible that after millennia that these abilities will begin to fade but more studies will have to be done on the matter.
Topaz Spider Silk
Silk from the Topaz Spider has some innate magical properties that allow it to enhance any magic placed on an item created from the silk. This innate magic also creates color-changing, iridescent silk that sometimes blends into the background or shines with a deep blue hue.

Ooo, what a cool idea. The silk itself sounds beautiful, so I imagine clothing made from it would be stunning.
