Siren's Mane
Hidden beneath the waves of the Helcus Strait, Siren's Mane is a species of thick seaweed, resembling in shallower waters heads of hair where it grows in clumps. It's popularly harvested for its medicinal purposes - Siren's Mane is a common ingredient in medicines, as well as its use as a type of wrapping for injuries when properly dried out.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Siren's Mane is a thick, vine-like type of seaweed, less leafy than some of its relatives. It's a species of brown algae, related to kelp, and is rooted to a surface. It grows especially well in the Helcus Strait due to the more shallow depths of the water, as opposed to the open ocean surrounding it.
Genetics and Reproduction
Siren's Mane can reproduce either sexually, combining gametes to form spores, or asexually, through fragmentation or division.
Growth Rate & Stages
Siren's Mane live through two life cycles - that of a spore, in which it becomes rooted and begins to grow, and the rest as growing seaweed.
Ecology and Habitats
The species grows only - or has only been identified - in the Helcus Strait, between Elaion and Aegia. It thrives off of the regular sunlight and shallow depths of the water here. It's the food for numerous different species, as well as harvested by sentient beings for medicinal and food purposes.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Siren's Mane gathers its nutrients through photosynthesis.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Siren's Mane is a staple in the development of medicines in Elaion and Aegia, most notably in Myripae and Tarmalina. The vine-like appendages of Siren's Mane are also often used as a wrap to cover injuries.
Scientific Name
Helci Seilun
Origin/Ancestry
Elladan
Lifespan
6-8 Years
Conservation Status
The rate at which Siren's Mane has been harvested is, at the moment, sustainable. However, if efforts continue to try draining the Helcus Strait of the species, it may easily become endangered, or worse.
