35,000 Years ago, the Federation of Earth and her Colonies (FEC) was attempting to pull limitless energy from dark matter and thus evolve into a truly post-scarcity society. However, the scientists attempting this did not understand the powers they worked with, and so success came at a high price. In an event that would later become known as the Energy Cascade Cataclysm, dark matter was fused permanently to the fabric of reality, creating the cosmic flow of energy that would later be formed into The Weave. The radiation backlash from this event transformed much of humanity into the races of Elves, Dwarves, and other humanoids. Those caught at the very epicenter of the blast were affected the most, absorbing much of the power in the local area and becoming the beings later worshiped as gods. The realm itself was left as an almost totally dead magic zone.   15,000 years later the chief scientist of the old darkmatter project, Dundax, had used his power to reform the Federation into an Empire, with himself at the head and Earth as its shining jewel. The galaxy prospered beneath his rule, the various humanoid races working in relative harmony on the thousands of worlds of the Empire. However, the Evil Wizard Zargothrax was jealous of the power Dundax wielded and had felt that he should be in charge since even before the cataclysm. He had plagued the empire for centuries at this point. Destroying factory worlds, kidnapping the princess, turning cities into tombs and then armies of the dead, but it was never enough. Finally he turned to a new power. Calling forth the strength of the abyss, a realm of limitless chaos and energy the darkmatter project was intended to draw from, he assaulted the Sol system with a vast demon army. The Forces of Justice rallied beneath the prince of the Empire, Angus McFife, to defeat Zargothrax once and for all. However, Zargothrax had at this point decided that if he could not rule this world, then nobody would. He began to open a portal that would call forth the fire of the abyss into the material plane, setting the entirety of the universe aflame. To prevent this, one of Angus' trusted generals detonated a neutron bomb in the Earth's core, destroying the planet, Zargothrax, and the portal. 30 Billion people died between the planet and surrounding stations, but the Universe was at last safe. Stunned at the carnage, Angus threw down his hammer and devoted his life to spreading joy instead of death.   Now 20,000 years later, most of the galaxy, fractured by the loss of central government, has forgotten this ancient history. We join a group of intrepid adventures on the planet Toril as they seek to make a name for themselves, stop the Rise of Tiamat, and perhaps uncover and ancient history, and evidence that the galaxy is not quite so safe from such old threats as once believed.
