Terrán

Around 50,000 people housed in a big sprawling mass. No one knows for sure how big Terrán the citizens don’t tend to react well to anything that might possibly be used for tax.   Located on the north coast of the continent on the major trade route across the northern seas. The peninsula on which Terrán stands bridges [NAME] across the Bay of Sirens and the shores of Lefryn beyond Glyn-Temar to the east.   Terrán is not an evil city it just exists in shades of grey. The high volume of trade and sailors mixed with the general isolation of Terrán results in individuals which take on rules that appear to the average outsider as lawlessness. The city is an excellent location in which to lose a tail: individuals who look too hard may see the flash of a blade instead.

Demographics

Terrán hosts a high amount of Gnomes (around 5% of the population) due to the destruction of Cahoika, the gnome settlement Sherlock Gnomes hailed from. The city is a melting pot of all races: even the rarest races can pass without comment.   The four hills sit on the landward side of Terrán and most of them have estates for the richer citizens.

Industry & Trade

Helsey Family: purveyors of magical goods.   The main source of income for Terrán is from the fishing trade. Terrán is actually credited with inventing insurance, but it was swiftly banned after its invention due to the tendency of insurance agents standing around outside people’s property remarking how flammable things were until they bought fire “insurance”. Anything that needs to be bought can be bought in Terrán. Further, there are a number of universities and a resulting flourishing trade in training apprentices.   The harbour stretches for most of the seafront with a number of different docks: there are so many ships there that it is sometimes referred to as the sea of trees.

Infrastructure

Terrán is an old town but buildings are a mix from several ages - areas of the city have a tendency to burn down. There are a few older parts of the town that feature stone houses and secrets. As Terrán grew it absorbed smaller villages and towns around it.   The buildings are mostly constructed of wood. However, some of the older houses have stone foundations of differing styles as Terrán is built mainly on the foundations of the last building help sure up the new buildings.   The four hills sit on the landward side of Terrán and most of them rich have estates built upon them. One of the hills is slightly desolate, as the city that tries to use all available space is actually trying to give this hill some room (this hill is on the south-east side). There are a few houses on this hill owned by the Helsey Family, but not many, and they are bigger, older and more run-down than most of the rest of the city.

Guilds and Factions

Harker: well known black market dealer. So much goes through Harker that he is almost considered legitimate.   Selane Boumal: Gnome alchemist extraordinaire, loves rare ingredients so she can make new and interesting formulations. She is most concerned about discovering new potions and effects. On the side, when she remembers, she is also the leader of the alchemical University of Bolinea, although she and her colleagues spend most of their time avoiding the students who just get in the way of research.

History

The main town of Terrán and the harbour used to be easy to distinguish, but about 400 years ago the harbour decided that the town was getting a bit to up itself and started to invade, now the harbour has stretched its salty sea fingers all the way through the city in the form of the canals.

Geography

The local area is predominately flat but there are four hills that originally ringed the city but with the expansion of the city they are now in what would be considered the suburbs of another city. Little farm land to the east and west of the city as the ground tends towards marsh and estuary, to the south (where the hills used to ring the city) you get more solid ground that used to be farmland, the farmland gets pushed further away.
At the dawn of the Third Age, the drunk wood elf Aleduial said that the masts rising from the harbour was so like a forest that she could cross the entire harbour without once touching the decks. This being Terrán, the bet was on. Aleduial swam through the air like an eagle, leaping one, two, three hundred masts. soaring to victory, she jumped for the final five masts, spilling the beer she had insisted on taking with her. Foot slipping, Aleduial's skull met a cross-beam with an almighty crack and she fluttered into the sea, never to be seen again.   So much money changed hands from the bets, the crowd founded several new bars on the dock that very day. One winner, a human named Glenar made enough to start her own trade shipping business. Fourteen years after the legendary attempt to cross the sea of trees, Glenar erected a statue in the harbour depicting Aleduial swinging off a mast, clutching her beer.
