The continent of Arcea was ravaged by an arcane disaster 500 years ago, where the 13 most powerful wizards fought each other to the death on one cataclysmic day known later to Church scholars as "The Fall of the 13". The Divines, the gods of this world, helped the Arceans rebuild their society, and led to the founding of the Church of the Divines, which became the governing class of Arcea to the present day. After the Fall of the 13, the Divines outlawed the practice of arcane magic to save the Arceans from themselves, essentially, and this led to a near fanatical drive by the Arceans to persecute and execute anything that used or was associated with the arcane. Their society became militant, and began to look outward to other continents, hoping to save them as they were once saved. The Crusades began, and this tide of bloodlust and war hasn't reached its end in the past 306 years that it has been going on. Some resistance to this has risen in the form of a clandestine group of deserters known as the Serpent's Liberators, which seeks to turn public opinion against the Church for the misdeeds wrought by their clerics in the Crusades and for the fanatical persecution they practice.
