Kyros Fernblade Species in Ifiron | World Anvil

Kyros Fernblade

Basic Information

Anatomy

Ferns that stand roughly 2-3 ft tall. They are nearly identical to normal ferns with the distinction being their height and the shape of their leaves, which resemble the shape of serrated knives. They can uproot themselves to essentially walk.

Genetics and Reproduction

During their period of fronds hardening during the spring, this is the time for them to drop spores and create copies of themselves.

Growth Rate & Stages

When first growing, they form "fiddleheads" which are a spiraling stalk that unravels as it grows older into a frond. More mature versions of the plants can have numerous fronds.

Ecology and Habitats

Forests. They span across numerous climates with regional variations. The Kyros Fernblades are nomadic plants, moving from place to place depending on the conditions. Their movements are not very predictable, but some Armories of Kyros Fernblades have been seen in repeated migration patterns. Some places have attempted to build Fernblade barriers, with little to no success.    They serve an important role in some ecosystems, cutting limbs off of other plants that help distribute seeds. They also clear underbrush, leading to fewer forest fires in those regions.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Sunlight and Nutrients from the ground. This can include recently created carcasses.

Biological Cycle

Near the end of Fall, the Kyros Fernblades lose their protective thorniness and encase themselves for the winter. Upon springtime, the plants lose their protective layer and wait for their fronds to harden.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Dropped Fronds are used as arrowheads in several societies.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They can detect movement through the ground, sunlight, and temperature. They can't see otherwise.
