Session 0.5

General Summary

Arrival

Minerva Tarkelby and Mervin were escorting the last caravan coming from Hundelstone before the pass closed behind them. While traveling, they could hear an avalanche behind them, but were unsure on what it was. But the pass has now closed, months before it should have.   With the caravan was their charge for the trip, Raymond Sturell, who is a merchant from Waterdeep, who has come to Icewind Dale for his second time to continue his business of buying up local knick-knacks to be sold back home to his rich contacts who are interested in various native artifacts.   The trip was fairly uneventful and they eventually reached the gates of Bryn Shander, which granted them entry after validating that they're not on the wanted posters.   Raymond Sturell suggested they join him in The Plucky Horseradish, which is a nice teahouse he'll be staying in, surprisingly coinciding with Mervin's plans of making contact with a local kobold who knows the area in the same location.

The Meeting

Upon reaching The Plucky Horseradish, they meet up with the rest of the group and make their first introductions with Aabel O'Hare, who drags a large sack filled with alcohol to Middy Winkers, the proprietor of the place. There's a short back and forth and the promise of fermented moose hemp brings Middy to agree to the price requested by Aabel.   They all sit around the table, some characters already clearly knowing eachother, while others being more like henchmen, who simply sit around.   We meet all the characters.
  • Minerva Tarkelby, the tall athelete with heavy armor and a lazy gaze.
  • Mervin, the strong dark haired merchant.
  • Hex Foolcut, the white scaled tundra kobold and his friend,
  • Exo'six a.k.a. EX-06, the tall masked figure who has EX-06 scarrified on his wooden arm.
  • Aabel O'Hare, the bunny and his aloof friend,
  • Tirten the reghed druid
  • There's also Pho, the half-orc warrior of justice

The First Quest

During their meeting, a strange young woman arrived at the tea house and was taken aback by the new arrivals and went to have a word with Middy.
After some time, she arrived at the table and made herself known to them as D'Annika Graysteel and offered them a small amount of coin to bring her a living Chwinga. After some conversation with her, the party accepted and she ran off to bring them a lantern that supposedly detects elementals.

The Second Quest

Some time after D'annika had left, without her hat and gloves, mind you, the party could see an old dwarf look at them from the corner of the room. After being called out for it, the dwarf put her book down and screwed in her pegleg and joined the party, introducing herself as Hilda Trollbane, which some of the local characters would know as a local taddle-tale and all-round nuisance to the sheriff, but she has her ways and actually does know things.   Hilda described to them the murders that had taken place in the towns of Bryn Shander, Targos and Easthaven in recent times. She's put together, that every murder occurred after Torg's wagon had just left town, aside from the first, which occurred right before they arrived. It was also strange, that right after the first murder, Torg's gained a new guard that seemingly had no issue with the cold and walked around like it's the middle of summer! Hilda's got not love for the elemental types in general, but this seemed off. She did some snooping and that's what she's found out so far from her sources. She's not 100% sure, but she believes that person might be the killer and wants the party to look into it and, finding confirmation, to kill the individual quietly, so nobody would know of it.   She warned, that should Torrga Icevein, who owns Torg's, learn that her employee was killed by the party, they would have a lot of problems to deal with.   After some more details, the party agreed and Hilda was satisfied, leaving the party to their drinks and went back to her book, while occasionally keeping an eye on them.

Nighttime

At some point D'annika Graysteel arrived to bring them the lantern and showed them how to use it and how it tracks elementals. Also she added that they shouldn't use it in Bryn Shander, as it would track the elemental-fused people living here and that's not nice.   She left shorty, with her gloves and hat this time, leaving the party to consider their options for bedding.   Before heading off for the night, Pho decided to barge into the backrooms, as he sensed the presence of an undead in the area and wanted to investigate, but was fought off by the screams of Middy as she promised to call the sherif on him if Pho doesn't vacate the premises immediately. After some help from the party, Pho backed off and was promptly banned from visiting the location again. But they'll be back.. and in greater numbers.   They decided to split up, Hex taking the newcomers with him and Aabel and Tirten going to their own house. Pho went to rest with his congregation headquarters.

The Third Quest

In the morning, they met up and decided to head to the Blackiron Blades to stock up on resources before heading out in search for Torg's, which had left about a week earlier towards the east. Upon arriving, Aabel O'Hare naturally decided to kick in the door again, but it seems Garn was ready for him and had made some adjustments and, through that, pain for the little bunny.   While purchasing supplies, Garn The Hammer proposed that the party might be looking for some work and he might know a guy that needs some guys. They were naturally curious and got directions to go talk to some dwarves who need some help.

The dwarves

They met the dwarves in The Northlook, in the north end of town, where the dwarves were slowly getting drunk. Their leader, Hruna of Clan Battlehammer told them of a Yeti attack against their sled and it grabbing their friend Obbo and throwing him far. They obviously ran as fast as they could from the area, but were too afraid to return to see what had happened. They need someone to go there and take a look and to bring the iron and their friend back to town, if possible. They'll pay well.   The party naturally agreed, as it seemed faster than going towards Easthaven and trying to find Torg's and the potential killer.

The Search

They set out immediately with their new supplies in tow and some of them took the quick way down in the form of sleds that the local kids are providing to travellers, while losing some gold on the way.   An hour from the town, having barely made it to the edge of Maer Dualdon, a blizzard hits them and they decide to make camp to wait it out. It lasts for quite a few hours, but the locals know what to do and keep the camp as safe as possible, while using up some firewood.   They spend 5 hours simply resting in their tents and cooking their frozen fish, but eventually, the blizzard subsides and they head off towards the Dwarven Valley, which should be the direction where the sled ought to be.   The search takes them some time, but eventually they find the overpass that Hruna of Clan Battlehammer described and find.. nothing. Nothing except many small tracks and the tracks of the sled being pulled away from here. They also manage to locate the body of Obbo, with it's head and legs missing, hidden next to the wall of the rocky outcropping, covered with snow. They take the body with them and find some coin on it, which is promptly grabbed.   Tracking the sled, they're quite exhausted already and Mervin, Minerva and Pho are all feeling the cold bite through their bones, but they manage to catch up to the would be thieves and find a group of six goblins dragging the sled with all their might. Having not noticed the party arrive from the back, they're startled as Tirten calls out to them in goblin. They have a short conversation about the ownership status of the sled, but eventually have a breakthrough after offering the goblins some heavy alcohol, which causes a heavy burning sensation, with which the goblins are unaccustomed to. Having received a gift of warmth and seeing the numbers, the goblins decide to leave the sled and take their chances with their leader, which can be somewhat visible ahead in the distance in the form of a large moving tower. The party and goblins part ways, as the kobolds begin taking off some clothes and are generally in a giddy mood.   The goblins never made it back to their leader and froze to death on the way.   The party leaves the goblins behind and makes way for a resting spot, which is a small cave where they can all fit and hide themselves from most of the cold. After a long restless campfire against the howling wind, they pack up and take the long trek back to Bryn Shander and make it there by the early morning hours, a bit before people start moving around usually.   Deciding to not wait for it, they visit Gram and hand off the iron and the sled and take the body of Obbo to Hruna of Clan Battlehammer and gain their rightful reward, with a bonus for recovering the partial body.   In total, the party received the thanks of the Blackiron Blades in the form of 10% discount going forward and an open invitation to visit the Dwarven Valley and make their rest there, should they choose to do so.   And with that, we end our session.
