The Crucible

If Khromarium is to be seen as nothing more than an economic entity, a vast, sprawling trading port, warehouse, and the (de facto, for who else could possibly compete?) industrial capital of Hyperborea, then The Crucible is one of the only boroughs that has any real importance, along with Dockside and The Agora.   Massive ironworks and glassworks abound in this borough, with smokestacks as tall as redwoods- but with the opposite effect on the environment. Air pollution, street pollution, and noise pollution are undoubtedly the worst in The Crucible. Although a step up from Dockside, The Crucible is still certainly one of the poorest sections of Khromarium. But just like Dockside, its poverty is contained within an economic powerhouse. Importantly, however, most of The Crucible's industrial input, save for the invaluable commodity of peat, does not come from the lands under the city-state's control, as the infertile and inhospitable Lug Wasteland yields little in the way of natural resources. It has to be imported from the docks. Thus, Dockside and its Boroughmaster will always be able to exert significantly more of their power on The Crucible than on the other boroughs. For this reason, the Boroughmaster of The Crucible, Sappho the Star-Eyed, is a fierce rival to Xelltair Vunkorros.
