Stronghold

Stronghold is not elegantly named, nor is it elegantly built– unless one has a gothic fondness for high, imposing black walls. Yet it fulfills the function suggested by its title to the letter; It is strong, and it holds.
The Hyperborean family that rules the castle of Stronghold the borough it comprises by itself, the House of Zhaan, claims to have had possession of the structure since time immemorial, and certainly well before the Green Death. Without much in the way of disputing historical records, it is likely that they are right. Still, there are a few peculiarities in architectural style, such as a few turrets crowned by cones of ebony tile, some inner towers built of hardened mud, and the sheer ancientness that reeks from every line of the stone against the horizon, that seem to suggest an origin earlier and more alien than the Hyperboreans will admit.
Regardless, Stronghold is unquestionably the military center of Khromarium. The House of Zhaan might have even tried to simply subjugate the rest of the city by force, but they are held in check by their economic reliance on the outside city, as well as their own debts that they have swept under the rug of familial pride.

Demographics

About 800-900 of the residents are soldiers, and about 100 are servants of the Zhaan family. The rest are commoners of varying trades.
