In Khromarium, a diluted yet nonetheless incredibly potent concentration of Black Lotus pheromones is widely circulated as the most addictive narcotic in Hyperborea. The Lotus Drug, as it is commonly known, is the most lucrative and most destructive industry in the city-state. It is obtained in hidden laboratories via the growth of Black Lotus spores that are killed upon reaching adulthood (even the destructive greed of the narcotics producers is nearly destructive enough to allow such a plant to reach maturity). The Boroughmasters do not associate publicly with the production and sale of the drug, yet nearly all but the most pious of the city's rulers have their hands steeped deeply in its trade. Of their number, Xelltair Vunkorros has by far the most controlling influence in this underground business
Some scholars view the phenomenon of the Lotus Drug epidemic as not just a societal plague, but an environmental one. They point out that it is any organism's goal to expand and multiply to its maximum potential, and that the Lotus Drug trade of Khromarium conveniently lines up with what should be the natural aim of any species.
