Shamanistic Animism

Alyeskans are shamanistic animists with a healthy dose of pantheism. Their spiritual leaders mediate between spirits and humans. There is no absolute ruler, divine mother or father, no wind gods or solar creators. There are no eternal punishments.

Alyeskans don’t worship, they fear.

Alyeskans believe that objects can be imbued with magical properties. Most Alyeskans are never caught without several amulets or totems on their person.

Alyeskans are generally heavily tattooed. They believe that tattoos are their final and only communication with the spirit world. Their tattoos tell the stories of their lived lives, provided them with preternatural power in battles and informed the spirit world of their preferred afterlife.

Different tribes had unique requirements from their shaman. Tribes located by the sea prayed for calm seas and fair winds. Forest tribes might need healing from tribal sickness, abundant herds and otherwise scarce water.

Alyeskans believe in a spirit world that could be very active in the material world. They believe these spirits can be good or evil. They can heal sickness or bring famine.

Shamans are greatly respected but they are not considered infallible.

”I will worship whatever I need to, whatever will give me the greatest chance at survival.”
