Moonlight Turnuroth

Turnuroth (a.k.a. Mooncake, Little Highness/Princess)

Will there be food?
Moonlight is a young Dragonborn that leads a quiet nomadic life. The fastest way to motivate her, or make friends with her, is to feed her. The only thing she loves more than food are the various critters and beasts that roam the land as freely as she does.

Family

Moonlight was born to the two most powerful members of her clan. Her Father Solarian, is one of the few Dragonborn that not only has a Dragon form but can shift freely between it and his birth given form. Her Mother, Kailani is a pureblood Dragon gifted long ago with several forms including that of a Dragonborn. Moonlight also has a younger sister named Mahina, who inherited her fathers ability to shift into a dragon but only for short periods of time, and has yet to do so without having to sleep for several days after shifting back. She also has a turtle companion named Turtolini. Her rich heritage not only granted her a more striking appearance, but also a high status in the clan. Most members called her "Little Highness or Little Princess" despite not being any smaller than the other Dragonborns her age.

The Story of Moonlight

Like most members of her clan, Moonlight was born after spending an entire year in her egg, in a nest all by herself. Unlike the others, her egg was sapphire blue with silver speckles. The clan had never seen an egg with such colors and markings; and knew she was special before she was hatched. No one was sure how special she would be; or what powers she would have coming from the two most powerful and unique members of the clan. From the day she was hatched she was adored by all the clan members and she had a special place in her father and mothers hearts. While she basked in the love of her clan and her family, she found a love of her own, food. It is unusual for members of her clan to think of food as something other than sustenance, and even stranger for them to want to learn how to cook and bake. Moonlight however, wanted to taste and learn everything she could about food. She often cooked treats for other members of the clan despite their lack of interest. They were always grateful, even if they were a bit perplexed with her behavior.   When Moonlight was five years old something even more unusual happened. Her parents had a second child. Normally members of her clan only have one child, despite other clans having many children. Moonlight's little sister, Mahina, was hatched from an egg that was red like a ruby; that sparkled in the sun. Moonlight fell in love with her baby sister immediately, and was always the first to jump in when she needed something. She would try to teach her about cooking from day one; despite the tiny Dragonborn not having the same appetite as her older sister. The bond the two sisters formed was unbreakable and made their parents very very happy.   As the two sisters grew and Mahina grew into her powers, Moonlight continued her culinary exploration and learning about the world around her. She quickly learned that she was unique to her clan in yet another way. Moonlight seemed to have an almost magical connection to animals and nature. Her parents had no clue how to nurture her powers and suggested she go and explore the world outside of her clan. Moonlight did not want to leave her home and family. For the first time in her life, she was full of defiance and wanted nothing to do with her parents wishes. Her parents did not want to push her but were afraid she would resent them and herself if she stayed. They asked her to compromise and everyone agreed that whatever her decision was on her 14th birthday, they would support it. Moonlight was adamant that time would not change her desire. As it often does, time was going to do just that.   Just one week before Moonlight's birthday, Moonlight went to wake her sister to watch the sunrise; as she did every first day of the week. When she did however, Mahina was not there. Moonlight was surprised but thought she just got a head start on her. When she got to their usual spot, Mahina was not there either. Moonlight tried to remain calm and went to her parents to get help. When she arrived, she found her mother, father and Mahina! After breathing a sigh of relief, she realized Mahina was glaring at her. "You ruined the Surprise! It's too early Moonlight!" Mahina stomped her foot annoyed at her big sister. Confused Moonlight just stared as her sister sighed and gave her a small basket with a cloth over the top. "You might as well take your gift now. Happy early birthday!" Moonlight took the cloth off the basket, and in the basket was a small turtle on a blue satin pillow soundly sleeping. Moonlight let out small sound of excitement careful not to drop the turtle. "She is so cute! Like a little tortellini! Oh! That's perfect! I will name her Turtolini!" Moonlight set the basket down and gave her sister a huge hug. "Somehow we knew you would like her Mooncake. Your father and I put everything you need to take care of her in your room. Your father got her from a human merchant on his last trip to their capital." Moonlight thanked her family and immediately went to set up her new friend's home.   On the morning of her birthday, Moonlight put on her ceremonial garb and raced to her parents to tell them she wasn't going anywhere. When she got there, her mother smiled and told her that there would be time to discuss what was decided after the celebrations. Moonlight would have protested if she hadn't spotted the most beautiful cake she had ever seen. She agreed to focus on the festivities for the time being and ran away to practice for the main ceremony. In her clan, the 14th birthday is when young Dragonborns undergo the "ʻAhaʻaina." All members come to celebrate and encourage. The level of detail and extravagance varies depending on the role a dragon has in the clan. Being at the top of the clan, Moonlight would have to read from the ancient scripts and ask for the blessings of the Sun and Moon. She took her studies very seriously leading up to the day; and had no worries that she would carry out the 'Aha'aina perfectly.   When it was time, Moonlight walked down the prepared aisle in front of the entire clan down to the seat of power; where her father and mother awaited her. She recited all the scripts without a single stumble, and turned to ask for the blessings of her clan before asking the Sun and Moon. "My family, I care for everyone of you as you care for me. Please give me your blessings and your strength." Just as the clan let out a collective sound of approval the moon was suddenly blocked by a dark cloud. A hush fell over everyone as they wondered what it could mean. The silence was broken by a scream as the dark cloud began diving quickly toward the crowd. The cloud was a massive winged figure and before anyone could react it grabbed little Mahina and took off into the night. Both Solarian and Kailani immediately changed into their Dragon forms and took off after the dark figure. After several hours, they returned exhausted and without Mahina. Moonlight immediately stormed to her room, packed some belonging, and grabbed Turtolini. "Mooncake where are you going?" her mother said, tears in her eyes. "To get my sister!" "Sweetheart please don't go anywhere you don't even know where she is!" "I don't care! I will find a way!" "Your mother is right stay here. The whole clan will help us look as soon as we catch our breath." Moonlight screamed in frustration and went back to her room; not knowing what to do.   Days went by, and despite everyone searching, there was no sign of Mahina. Every day Moonlight stayed in her room not eating even when her parents made sure food was left at her door. She looked out her window and prayed to anyone that would listen to find her sister. After a week went by a Dragonborn from another clan came to visit her father. Moonlight tried to eavesdrop but couldn't get close enough to hear what was going on. Moments later she saw the same dragonborn being drug out of the main throne room seemingly unconscious. Moonlight went into the throne room to find her father pacing back and forth angrily. When he saw her his eyes softened. "Mooncake, you came out of your room? Are you hungry? Do you need anything?" Moonlight looked at her father concerned. "Who was he?" Solarian sighed and hugged his eldest child. "A messenger. He had information about your sister." "My sister?! Where is she? Let's go get her!" Her father's grip tightened on her, not letting go. "No Mooncake. They took her on purpose. They want us to combine clans by force." Moonlight froze as tears began filling her eyes. "What do we do now?" "WE do nothing. Myself, your mother, and our best warriors will show them true force. It is time for war my Mooncake. Please stay here to take care of the rest of the clan." "I want to go with you!" "NO! You will stay and you will do your part!" Moonlight's father had never raised his voice with her before and she knew he was right. She nodded and went to go prepare.   Solarian stuck true to his word and by the next day he and several others left to take Mahina back by force. After Eight days, most of the warriors came back in one piece. Some were seriously injured, and sadly, two did not return. They all reassured her that her mother, father and sister were alive and on their way. As night fell she saw the familiar silhouette of her mother slowly descending. Her father behind her. As they landed she looked desperately for Mahina. As they got closer she saw her mother carefully cradling her sister's un-moving body. Before she could panic her mother whispered. "It's alright Mooncake, she is just sleeping. She shifted to help her own escape once she saw us and you know it is exhausting to her." Moonlight smiled and hugged her mother and took her little sister from her. As she looked toward her father she saw him smiling with tears in his eyes. "We can all sleep soundly now. It's been a long few weeks." As they retired moonlight carried her sister to her bed and tucked her in. She placed Turtolini's habitat next to her sister's bed. "Watch her ok? I'll check in later." As she went to her own room she saw her mother tending to her father and saw he was covered in several gashes and tears. She stopped and stared in concern until her mother turned and saw her. "He's fine. Go to bed we will talk in the morning." Moonlight nodded and went to bed.   The next few days were all the same. Every morning Moonlight checked on her sister and Turtolini waiting for her to wake. Then spent the day switching between helping her mother tend to other clan members, and checking on her sister. Five days later, Her sister finally woke and there was much celebration. It was decided that Moonlight should finish her ʻAhaʻaina now that her sister was safe and awake. This time, it went exactly the way it was supposed to. The next morning Moonlight made a huge breakfast for her family. During Breakfast she informed them that she would be leaving their home. " I need to explore the world, and grow stronger. I need to be able to protect the people I care about and I can't do that. There has to be a reason why I don't have the powers you guys do. I have to find a way to use my own powers." Her Mother and sister looked at her shocked by her sudden announcement but her father began laughing. Moonlight frowned at her father and eventually glared when he continued to laugh. "Oh Mooncake, I knew you would come to this conclusion. I just wasn't sure how long it would take. You are powerful already but you are my daughter and I know how you feel. Stop glaring at me Kailani! She has every right to go out into the world. She will be fine." Kailani glared at her husband and kicked him under the table. "How can you say that! I already almost lost one of my babies! How can you be OK with risking the other?!" Moonlight smiled as her mother scolded her father as he laughed the more annoyed she got. Mahina shook her head and got up from the table. Everyone stopped to stare at her. "I think Sis should go. She is the most unique of us all. She has to have something amazing in store for her." Moonlight smiled at her sister and left to go pack.   After she was done packing, she took her time to say goodbye to every single member of the clan. She made sure to take Turtolini with her and went to say goodbye to her family. After a tearful goodbye, and her mother having to be forced to let go of her, she set off to see where her feet would take her. She wandered into the forest near her home and began taking in the world.

So good! <3 It's a cozy kind of story, and I like that it gives her motivation to brave the wide world of adventures. I still think Turtolini is the most brilliant turtle name ever :D
