Asafoetida

Asafoetida is the capital city of Mea'ala as well as the seat of the Turnuroth Dragonborn Clan. It sits high atop ancient volcanoes and mountains overlooking where fire and water clash. Few outsiders have been allowed to venture into its gates.

I have dreamt of being on the other side of these great towers for centuries. Today I achieve my dream and behold the harsh beauty of Asafoetida.

An Ancient City

Asafoetida was built by ancient dragons after "The Long Dark." These ancient creatures had no issues seeing in the ash-darkened realm and used it as a place to hide from the chaos being caused by civil unrest amongst other species. The dragons that built Asafoetida started by carving directly into the mountains for the primary building. As time advanced and The Moon-Catcher of Asafoetida began to fill with water, they began retrieving large chunks of the previously erupted volcano to erect additional structures. As the sun returned to the area many dragons left the city leaving it mostly abandoned to change hands several times over the centuries.

Leadership

Asafoetida is lead by the heads of the Turnuroth Clan, Solarian and his wife, Kailani. Solarian, a powerful Dragonborn, claims to be a descendant of the original dragons that founded Asafoetida. Kailani, is a pure-blood dragon with the rare gift to have several alternate forms. Together with their daughters, Moonlight and Mahina, they provide guidance, spirituality, justice, and protection for the citizens of their city. They also serve as protectors of the Moon Catcher and "master of ceremony" for all important events including the 'Aha'aina. Solarian often boast that it is not the crown of Huggleland that lets him lead, it is his birthright and he is the one allowing the crown to enjoy their "delusion." Other dragons and Dragonborn are strictly prohibited from entering the city to prevent territorial disputes or ancient politics.

City of Dragons

All of the structures in Asafoetida are incredibly large. This is to accommodate dragons of every size. All of its citizens, save two, are Dragonborn, and most can shift into some form of dragon. The exceptions are the only true dragon, Kailani, and an old hermit named "Cal." The tall structures have large openings up high for easy takeoff and landing. In front of the primary structure there is a large stone platform where all major ceremonies are performed and where Solarian goes to greet the morning. Below the platform is The Moon-Catcher which gives the city its fertile soil and lush greenery. The primary citadel is the home to Solarian and his family as well as a place of shelter when needed. There is a throne room for greeting dignataries however, it is mostly used as a common area. Being a city founded and lead by Dragons, the city is incredibly independent and has no need for the outside world during times of peace.
