'Aha'aina Tradition / Ritual in Huggleland | World Anvil

'Aha'aina

When a young dragonborn in Asafoetida nears 14 years of age, their family begins preparing for the 'Aha'aina. The 'Aha'aina is a tradition that represents the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Dragonborn spend time leading up to the ceremony decidign and preparing for what type of life they want to persue. Most dragonborn follow in their parents footsteps however, unlike other clans, the Turnuroth clan of Asafoetida encourages younglings to be open minded. Until the 'Aha'aina is completed, a dragon born is not considered a full citizen nor can they make major life decisions for themselves.
Under the ancestors and before your clan, bathe in the mooncatcher and emerge from it anew.

Ceremony

On the day of their 14th birthday, dragonborn begin their day by taking extra care getting ready in ceremonial garb and painting their arms. Each dragonborn's outfit is comprised of colors and symbols that represents their family. They paint their arms with colors and symbols that represent their future path as well as hopes and dreams. When they are ready the clan assembles and forms a path from their home to ceremonial seat of power of Asafoetida. The clan leaders Solarian and Kailani greet them and they are ledge to the stone edge. Kailani leads with an opening prayer to the ancestors before the young dragonborn receites family prayers and ask their clan to support them in their journey into adulthood. Kailani places a crown made by the clan upon the dragonborn's head and gives one more prayer before giving her final blessing. Once her blessing is complete, the dragon born dives into The Moon-Catcher below to be bathed in it's sacred waters. Once they emerge from the water they are considered an adult and the entire clan cheers. The ritual is complete and there is celebration with music, dancing, and merriment.

After Transition

Once the dragonborn has undergone the 'Aha'aina they are considered a full citizen of Asafoetida and an adult with control over their own life. They can vote on clan matters, own property, travel unaccompanied, marry whomever they choose, and make all major life decisions for themselves. Despite the freedom they now have most dragonborn choose to stay with their family for at least a little while to get additional guidance, education, and stability while they make a life for themselves. Oftentimes, the clan brings gifts to the new adult in order to assist them in the paths they choose. No matter which path they choose, dragonborn that have undergone the 'Aha'aina are officially respected adults.
