In the year 2036 a deadly disease, known as the gray plague broke out and ravaged humankind. The world's leading scientists worked endlessly to secure a cure, but ended up failing again and again. In a last bet to ensure the survival of humanity the smartest, still healthy people on the planet were sent into space on giant spaceships called arks. When the plague had run it's course and there were no survivors left, these arks returned to repopulate the earth and return civilization to it's previous glory. The world was transformed into a scientific paradise, but deep rivalries run between the different fields of science that might prove impossible to bridge. New laws and regulations ensure that every major city has a university and everyone is required to attend university and get a diploma. Freshmen are required to move into student housing with algorithmically generated housemates. Manual labour is entirely replaced by a robotic workforce so that every citizen can fully devote their life to the pursuit of science. Although most creative pursuits are also conducted by machines, humans are still allowed to make a job out of painting, writing or other forms of creative expression as long as they write at least one scientific paper a year.

It is in this absurd scientific world that Raymond "Ray" Hertz finds himself enrolling for a history degree, but he soon finds out that he got more than he bargained for when he gets placed in "House Hamelin" a new house designated for student use. His housemates turn out to be eight freshmen girls from competing student societies. Amidst the chaos of his new student life he needs to balance his relationship with the girls as well as his own goals of discovering the truth behind the plague and his family.
