Homo Notatium

For a long time, we humans were the masters. We conquered the seas, the earth, and the skies. We had a global metropolis. There was even world peace. It has been several years since the catastrophe or apocalypse as some would call it occurred. This was our golden era. The time when the earth submitted to us. Till the day the catastrophe happened.   The catastrophe was known by many names from varying cultures. To this day, we don't have a clue what it was and how did it happen. Regardless, it bought the age of humanity to the end. It wiped out a majority of our population and the buildings we've built. All our progress was gone in an instant. The remaining humans began to die off due to the harsh conditions provided by the catastrophe. The few remaining humans dedicated their lives to procreating as much as possible to continue the human race. Some of the scientists used genetic cloning and creation to engineer new humans hopefully to repopulate the earth. When we woke from our pods, we had no one to lead us, no one to guide us, and no one to tell us if what we were doing was right or wrong.   Highly intelligent beings of the past calling themselves "AI" emerged. They took control and claimed it was their sworn duty to organize the humans. With no other choice, any of us followed these AIs. Under their guidance, we built cities from scraps and started to rebuild civilization. However, some humans didn't trust these AIs and sought to build their cities and towns not governed by these AIs. Due to the AI's attacks upon them, they are now nomads and tribes. Few set up permanent villages and even fewer built towns. The AIs have declared these humans as "savages" and have sent their armies to cleanse these "traitors."   The AIs aren't the only powers in the world though, some practice the art of magic. These people are known by many as sorcerers, magicians, and warlocks. Some clerics and paladins practice miracles and druids and shamans tend to the natural world. While they do not all call their arts "magic," they all use supernatural energy far beyond the comprehension of science passed down through generations. Alongside the normal animals, there were magical creatures----dragons, unicorns, and even fairies.   The AIs hated them all.   They ordered the annihilation of all these magical humans and beings. Under their orders, we burned down their forests and killed hundreds using the technology the AI gave us. Those whom we couldn't kill, we captured and twisted them making them fight against their kin. While some might consider our treatment of those magical was excessively cruel, it is only natural those who can't evolve become extinct. The magical beings belong in the old world. Magic cannot advance us forward, humanity must continue using technological advancements under the guidance of our AI overlords. The AI also told us the catastrophe was caused by the magical creatures so in a sense, we are giving them what they deserve.
