Carus Hallerman

Carus Hallerman (a.k.a. Gunslinger)

Born in 729.M41, Carus grew up on the Frontier World of Ysai Ydumee in the Golgenna Reach of the Calixis Sector. Carus experienced a rough childhood, with his mother dying in childbirth to his younger brother Harren, and his father Johnan killed in the line of Arbite duty when Carus was a young age. Carus and Harren quickly learnt to rely on each other in order to survive, moving from city to city and avoiding attention.   During an attack by an underhiver scum, Carus protected his brother from attack, but in the process lost the fine motor function of his right hand as it caught the scum's blade. Although able to escape with their lives, the two remained vulnerable and without a proper upbringing. The brothers were shortly inducted into the Schola Progenum, where Carus had to learn to use his left hand after losing the natural use of his right. Despite the initial challenge, Carus became surprisingly adept with his left hand, developing a proficiency for one-handed weapons such as pistols, being one of the highest ranking in shooting drills among his fellow Progenum. Carus was chosen as particularly gifted in combat despite his drawback, and joined the ranks of the Adeptus Arbites following in the footsteps of his father.   Shadowed by the unexpected talent of his older brother, Harren progressively become abnegated from his Arbite duties and entangled himself in Xenos technology, unable to resist the Heretical temptations for power. As Carus rose the ranks of the Adeptus Arbites after he reached adulthood, he learnt of his brother's secret and was torn between his oath to the Emperor and the only family he has truly known. Harren was branded a Traitor, now dedicated to the Dark Gods, and escaped across the Golgenna Reach, in the process abandoning his newborn daughter. In pursuit of his brother, Carus adopted his voidborn niece as his own, naming her Ryna. Losing the trail of his brother, Carus continued his work on capturing and maintaining a hold on the Xenos tech trade within the sub-sector. Carus gained the attention of the Ordo Hereticus and Ordo Xenos of the Inquisition, and soon realized his adopted daughter possessed psychic powers and great potential. Carus was forced to surrender Ryna to the Black Ships, and through embittered contention, was able to broker a deal with Inquisitor Wroth that Carus would work as long as Ryna would not be left to suffer the same fate as her father. Wroth agreed and immediately put Carus and his skills to use. With the fate of Ryna placed in the Inquisition's hands, Carus could continue the search for his brother while also investigating various cases on behalf of the Ordo Hereticus.

The Desert Stash
20 May 770.M41

Waking up today, we found that Cornelius had come down with a sickness and was unable to operate. We left him to recuperate at HQ as we departed to investigate the desert stash described to us by the prisoner.   Visit to the Vostroyan, meet Steiner, ask about Zane's father. He was deprived of a case and committed suicide. Also describes about creature he fought the night before, found on the planet but not native.   Go out to desert with Zane, find dead bodies with cuts. One of them is Jester's Blade. Ambushed by crab-like creatures that burrow in sand. I burst with full-auto and completely destroy one of the two creatures. The other retreats into the sand.   We enter cave, find distressed Jester's Blade. Crastus attempts to calm him down, struggle ensues.   Found stash: room full of autoguns and PDF firearms in crates, each has the same serial number. Arrested delirious gang member, called in Steiner to come confiscate weapons. 142 autoguns, 142 handcannons, 50 shotguns. We make our way back to the Hive following convoy.   We sedated the delirious prisoner, and I showed Zane some billiards skills.

Escaping the Blue's Hotel
19 May 770.M41

Upon exiting the Blue's Hotel, we met up with Cortez who had made the acquaintance of a young aspiring Arbite named Zane, who was rather naive about the current situation. He tagged along as the sounds of gunfire continued to get closer. One of our Arbite teams was being pinned down out-front of the club, so we stopped to assist.   On our arrival, a pair of Enforcers were pinned down behind their vehicle. We pulled up and immediately engaged the shooters. There were two gunners firing from the second story of an apartment, the rest of the team put down suppressing fire as I moved towards the door and attempted to breach. Attempting to shoot the lock with my Laspistol, to utter failure. I ended up just kicking down the door with brute force, as my team members kept the attention of the gangsters upstairs.   Making my way upstairs I dodged the quick shot made by one the gang members, and returned a shot of my own from my shotgun loaded with inferno rounds. Cortez made his way to me and helped me finish him off, helpless as he was set ablaze.   We brought back the child, Zane, and both prisoners, with us back to the base. One of the prisoners was shot in the pursuit, how unfortunate. We questioned both Zane and the surviving prisoner, the latter more violently. Brensinger decided the prisoner had outlived his usefulness. We reported to Wroth on all our findings, including the child. He was, surprisingly, unconcerned as to this development. He suggested we kill the child, or keep him to prove himself as an asset. Either way, it was up to use as Acolytes in the end.

The Raid on Blue's Hotel
14-19 May 770.M41

I awoke to a letter from our Inquisitor that my niece Ryna was on her way to visit. It was deemed it was best for her in order to avoid her getting 'burnt out'. I look forward to seeing her, despite the hard circumstance on which her arrival is based.   In more pressing matters, Cornelius found a bionic rat in his room. It appears we had been bugged, and we contacted Wroth immediately. According to Cornelius' visions, the rats were being given to scum by Adeptus Mechanicus. Traitors!   Additionally, the prisoner disclosed the Jester's Blade HQ as the Blue's Hotel, a nightclub in a housing complex. We went to scout out the place but our acolyte colleague Steiner called us urgently. Turns out he was investigating a case of a runaway prince of House Clawford, none other than the noble who had faced Cornelius in a game of Regicide earlier this week. His coat had been found by itself in an abandoned warehouse with no other trace. Steiner passed the investigation onto us, so we continued our other leads in the meantime.   We scouted our the Blue's Hotel, now being used 24/7 for hivers to enjoy themselves. Crastus attempted to 'acquire' clothes from a neighbouring resident, who immediately slammed his door on Brensinger as he disclosed his Arbite status.   Returning to our compound we visited the bar, where I got frustrated at the always fooling slot machines. We decided to end our ties with the prisoner, and readied our plan to storm the Blue's Hotel. We enlisted the backup of Steiner as a contingency plan in-case things went south.   We went through the rear entrance after neutralizing the two guards. Upon breaching what seemed to be a staff-only area seperate to the dance floor. Three men fled with their own bags and briefcases. We gunned them down and retrieved the intel. Our mission here was done for now.

Barfight with the Jester's Blade
13 May 770.M41

We were enjoying ourselves at our favourite bar. Chatting, drinking and enjoying some music. Cornelius had defeated a stuck-up nobleman who had stormed off angrily after his hasty loss. I was keeping my drinking up, trying to soothe the pain which continued to surge in my left hand.   A local gangster by the name of Sham had entered, along with six of his goons. He was wanted, the leader of the Jester's Blade. They'd confronted the fellow Arbite, Steiner. Of course, things only escalated from there, after he'd winked to me from across the bar. Drawing our weapons simultaneously, although I'd like to say I wasn't as fast as I usually would be. Still, we had the element of surprise and the rest of us had entered the fight, while surrounded at the bar. Crastus had delivered a mighty blow to one, while I put a devastating flurry of shots into two seperate goons, shattering the knee joint of one of them. In all the fire and fury, Sham and Steiner were going hand to hand.   The Arbite managed to capture him by the end of it, with the help of his female friend Theodora, who continued to put a quick shot into the 'resisting' Sham. Vann, the barkeep, peered out from behind the bar. Only a few of his drinks had been shot up. We captured one of the gangsters, thinking he'd be of some use to tell us exactly why they decided to attack us in the midst of day at a bar. Obviously, it hadn't turned out well for them.

Escape from the Blood Cult
5 May 769.M41

We had found ourselves captured by the Blood Cult. Suiting to their name, they'd beaten each of us to a pulp. I was holding out, this wasn't the worst I had gone through. I could hear Cortez having a panic attack in the next room as my captor kept up his interrogation. Knowing I was the biggest threat they'd chained me up tight.   It didn't take long for the heretics to lose focus. Cornelius had escaped his restraints, providing an oppurtunity for Cortez to calm down and him too to escape. Coming to free me we were able to, conveniently enough, secure a curtain rod and piece of charred wood as improvised weapons. Not the finest equipment, even compared to Hive Arbite standards. Anyway, we took on one the Heretics; I'd slammed the door right in his face, and as his colleagues came to help Cortez sprung out of the curtains. We were tactical geniuses, even after getting pummeled while chained-up. I'd secured one of the heretic's stub revolver, which come in mighty handy when blowing off one of their shoulders.   Either way, we'd cleared the place. Or so we'd thought. Collecting the evidence and getting to the car, Cornelius heard more footsteps from upstairs. In no shape to fight any further, we got the hell out of there.
