The Tower

Floors (From Lowest to Highest)

  1. Lower Form
  2. Spells: More of a small library than anything. Bookshelves along the walls and study carrels lined up in even rows. Open at all hours. Smells like old parchment.
  3. Transmutation: A very high ceilinged room with no furniture and a few ropes hanging higher on the walls than a Medium creature can reach. Smells like fear sweat.
  4. Conjuration: The watchword for materials in this room is durable and easy to clean. Smells like ammonia and peppermint. Grates in the floor, large scrub brushes and buckets, and a very thorough doormat at the entrance that seems to be enchanted. More open space than desks and chairs. Protective masks and leather ponchos hang along one wall.
  5. Necromancy: A dissection lab smelling of wine spirits. Looks a lot like the laboratory but with more pickled body parts and a steel table in the middle of the room big enough for a Medium creature...with leather straps to hold down limbs. A skeleton display stand is in one corner. The skeleton talks, but nobody minds it - that's just Maestro Mortimus and he's just hanging out.
  6. Abjuration: Walls lined with locks, shields, and armor that can be taken down and examined. Colors tend towards black and red. Smells strongly of rotten eggs and vinegar. Desks have fine carving and etching tools and a variety of puzzle boxes. A clear space on the floor has concentric circles starting with the diameter of a Medium person standing up and extending to ten feet across. A line about 15 feet away has a basket next to it with various projectiles, both harmful and not.
  7. Illusion: A mirrored maze, smelling of ginger.
  8. Evocation: Smells like ash. Resembles a firing range more closely than anything else. Earplugs, targets, clearly delineated areas for people to be and not be. A popular and noisy floor.
  9. Divination: More traditionally scholarly than many other floors in the Tower. Smells like incense. Blank journals, crystal balls, and a variety of interesting magical objects in and on the desks. A clean and hushed space.
  10. Enchantment: Smells like flowers and candy. The walls are crowded with informative posters about consent and magical ethics. A number of cubicles with walls of leaded crystal create little pockets of magical quarantine that can still be observed from the outside. The floor is covered in padded mats, as though people are expected to fall frequently here.
  11. Upper Form

Purpose / Function

Academic and research building for wizard students and staff at Hilltop Preparatory Academy.

Architecture

This building is the earliest purpose-built academic building on campus and the most traditional. Traditional meaning built according to strict metaphysical code out of marble so smoothly cut and tightly fitted as to be nearly impossible to find a seam between the blocks, in an upright column tapering at a subtle and very specific angle, with a prime number of floors and three times as many crenulations on the parapet surrounding the open air observation deck on the roof. Windows to be evenly spaced both horizontally and vertically and precisely circular, and a single entrance on ground floor facing due East. Get it wrong in the construction and be held liable for any wizard who blows themself up therein when the resonance is wrong for whatever magical experiment they had running.

That is to say, it looks a whole lot like every other wizard's tower on the continent. This particular tower is mid-sized with 11 floors, has a delightfully deep dark green tinge from the serpentine marble that makes the Diviners happy, and sees much more foot traffic and noise than most wizard's towers.

Like all wizard's towers, the floors are reached by a staircase directly inside the outer wall that ascends sunwise. Upper Form students may choose to use the designated Misty Step landings to save time. Floating Disk is discouraged due to limited space in the stairwell, and Spider Climb outright forbidden due to safety concerns. Therefore, one must have access to second level spells to take the shortcut to classes on higher floors, and Lower Form students are stuck climbing the whole way. There is a rumor that Decane Seren is discouraging new students from choosing Enchantment as their primary school, but the truth is, the teachers just drew straws.
