The Dread Marduk
Captain of the Thousand Cuts
What is a pirate? Is it someone who patrols the seas taking and plundering as they see fit? In that case, The Dread Marduk is no pirate. Why of course the Dread takes whatever they see fit, but it is whom they choose to plunder from that makes them unusual. Neither merchants nor travelers fear the Dread Marduk. Their ship could be on the horizon with its black body and crimson sails and there would be no danger. That is of course, unless you were the target of Marduk and their Crew upon the Thousand Cuts. That is, unless, you were under the command of Ra. What is a Captain? Marduk took upon the title of the Dread along with the rest of their original crew after escaping Manu Das decades ago and many of those who escape the city go looking to join them. Much like the rest of their crew, Marduk is a Xzel-ya with no mouth. Silent and stoic, the Dread is painted with a pattern of a Xzel-ya skull colored white upon their face. They dress modestly however, wearing the simple black and red cloth that the rest of the crew wears. They also have been stated to live an unnaturally long life for a Xzel-ya, but with all the ships that they raid that belong to Ra, there is no telling what treasures they may have found. What is a crew? The crew of the Thousand Cuts are all escaped Xzel-ya, just like the captain. As such, two things are certain. They can not eat and they can not speak. To get around the first, they must survive upon crystal infusion. Normally this can be an expensive process, especially for such a large group, but with the raids they perform they have enough stockpiled to survive comfortably. As for not speaking, the crew have developed a temporary paint to dip their hands in so that they can sign in the dark, should they be on the star-side of the planet. It’s often said that it can be eerie to watch the Thousand Cuts drifting towards you, hearing nothing but the waves and sails on the ship. What is a ship? The Thousand Cuts does not have any advanced technology. It is not magical. It is not cutting edge in any way shape or form. What it is, however, is perfectly designed for its crew. Every member of the Thousand Cuts is a Xzel-ya and as such they are all the exact same size with approximately the same physical abilities. Every member of the crew can be trained to perform every duty just as well as the next. It is, quite possibly, the most well run ship on all of Hesper. With its Blackwood body made from trees along the Manuxet Sea and the sails made crimson as they were made from the red tatters they wore escaping Manu Das. What is God to a King? A God is far and beyond a king, but if you can bleed make a God bleed, then they cease to be infallible. Ra has many ships on the sea, mostly staffed by his priests. The Dread Marduk has made it their mission to disrupt, plunder, raid, and or sink every single ship of Ra’s that they can. The goal is not to be rich or powerful. The goal is to cause as much trouble for Ra as is possible. And god damn is it working. So, what is a pirate? A pirate can be many things. They can be a warrior, laying waste wherever they go. They can be a trader with piles of ambers ya high. They can be an explorer, charting islands and seas that no one has laid eyes on before. What a Pirate can’t be is there Dread Marduk. They aren’t driven by these ideals, only by the shared belief of freedom. They are a beacon for others like them. A hope, an ideal. Not a pirate. A king.
