Spirit

UNKNOWN UNKNOWN (a.k.a. The Spirit)

For over a century the mysterious vigilante Spirit has haunted the criminal and corruption of Los Angeles. Literally. While he and his efforts go almost entirely unnoticed (a situation he is all too okay with) he has done great service to the city and it's people.

Personal history

When the man who would become the Spirit to Los Angeles in the 1870s, he found a lawless city full of racial violence, crime, and gross abuses of power, where the mob was 'justice' and a fast draw meant could be the difference between life or death. Seeing these injustices, and wanting to build a safer world for his wife and unborn children, he took on the more deplorable elements of his new home.   While he started small, simply trying to defend his family, his crusade grew quickly, and his willingness to call out systemic corruption and wrong doings put a target on his back. When faced with push back, the man who would soon be spirit doubled down, publicly swearing:
"To any and all gods that might be my witness, I will not rest until this town is safe for everyone's children."
Something heard this oath, though weather it was a god is highly debatable, and it decided to hold him to it. As it happened, time was running out for spirit. As LA had grown rapidly, the city had become more reputable but injustices and crimes continued to exist on both a small and systemic scale. Ultimately, Spirit managed to threaten too many people in power. He was killed in an ambush just shy of his 46th birthday, though we may never know who did the deed.   He was survived by his wife and three children, who fled the city shortly thereafter in fear of repercussions. At least one of his grandchildren would later return to the city.   But that wasn't the end of Spirit's story. The being that heard his oath granted him the ability to complete his quest- while dead and invisible to nearly all the world, Spirit's ghost remained in LA. With the ability to control stone and sand, and to summon blades made of elemental earth, Spirit is armed to take on LA's worst. The being has also equipped him with an easy way to find his next target- they're the only ones who can see his incorporeal form.    Spirit is also able to possess bodies, but only of his eliminated targets. These bodies' decay is supernaturally delayed, though they will eventually become unusable, forcing Spirit to either hunt his next target or return to his incorporeal form.

The Undead Life of a Loner

Spirit haunted the corrupt and criminal in this way with little to no outside interaction from 1908 until 1985. In this period he would occasionally possess human bodies to help his quest, or to satisfy emotional needs and remind himself of his own humanity. It was also in this time that he first learned that he didn't mind being in a female body.   In 1985, Spirit had a chance encounter with Lady Sol. At first he was annoyed with the young heroine, as she was getting in the way of his quest. He later defended her when she was threatened by his target's henchmen, and she returned the favour in the following fight. After working that case, and having a human witness his work for the first time in decades, Spirit had a growing respect and care for Lady Sol. He never intended to have friends though, and the two initially went their separate ways.   They would later cross paths a few more times before Lady Sol started to actively seek the Spirit out. The Spirit also found himself working with The Knight, and found their quests to be very similar. The Knight's focus on redemption made Spirit question some of his methods, and actively wonder if following an unknown, otherworldly beings moral judgements when deciding to take a life was really a direction he wanted to continue it.   This line of thought had a permanent and profound effect on Spirit, as he began to research his targets before killing them, to make sure they had actually committed crimes. He also began to question where his powers came from in the first place, and started to research magic and magical beings.   The more time Spirit spent with his human friends, the more in touch he became with his humanity. He started to eat more, enjoy doing things outside of his quest, and take more interest in the land of the living. He gained new faith in humanity as he saw the good after submerging himself in the worst of it for so long. Eventually, with prodding from the knight, he sought information about his family. This led to him meeting his remaining child, and his granddaughter who was working at a studio in LA.   Then, right in the middle of this growing happiness, the Knight was murdered. While the event was a horrific experience for all involved, Spirit found himself overwhelmed by the powerful emotions brought on by a crime with personal connections. He got more violent, eventually leading to friction between himself and Lady Sol. Even after the Knight's killers were dealt with, Spirit remained distant. He never liked the golden champion much, seeing him as a poor substitute for the friend he lost. He also disagreed with Flyer Rose's heroics, as she was still a child when she started.   Spirit very abruptly dropped out of what little connections he had, and willingly stopped possessing his human body. He continued his quest for a while, but soon lost interest in that, instead choosing to look out for his granddaughter and other young people in the city in his incorporeal form.    Spirit reconnected with Lady Sol when he accompanied the young Addison Reece as she took up her father's old Knight identity. A surprise team up of Lady Sol, Spirit, Addison's Knight, and Flyer Rose investigated the secrets in the Knight armour and a dangerous villain with dark designs on the magical set. Along the way, they also made the shocking discovery that Flyer Rose was Addison Reese's half sister, and the Knight's daughter from a previous relationship.   Spirit rekindled his friendship with Lady Sol during this event, and took up his quest once again. He is most commonly seen working with Addison since then, though he sometimes works with other young heroes. He still prefers to work below the radar, and many young heroes don't realise their good luck has a lot more with a mysterious ghost then fate.

Gender Identity

The spirit has a very complicated relationship with gender. While he primarily identifies himself with masculine language, he has found that he is very comfortable with feminine language, and with being in a female body. He has said on occasion that he is not a man, or at least not only a man, and has confided in Addison that he is likely nonbianary or bigender.
