Time of Darkness

When it started, no one was ready. All in one go, war broke out, the sun fell out of rhythm, the world tree shook with the rage of the gods - and everything fell apart. Half the city is gone already - she was shopping in the market when the first boreworm broke through. I can't even give her the rites. When I first heard what the dverge were doing, I was appalled, but now... perhaps they have the right of it.   There were some who wanted to name it, this living nightmare that will drag all our bones to gjall. They settled on the Time of Darkness. A ridiculous, pompous name, for a wretched terrible thing that has already taken so much. My father told me stories like this when I was young. When everything you knew disappears and all you can focus on is survival. He called it the churn.   We're all in the churn now.   ~ excerpt from journal of Astor'muonb, recovered from the ruins of Kena Lanu.
Known by a variety of names, including the Long War, the Winter War, the Last War, and so on and so forth, the Time of Darkness only recently came to a close. Lasting for centuries unknown, it ended when the Veil was erected and the last ðyrs footfalls faded from Miðgarr. The sun returned to a natural rhythm, and foundlings began to come out from the cracks where they had survived.   Considered by many to be a conflict between the gods, the Time of Darkness wracked the realms with earthquakes and massive shifts in geography, along with fluctuating and unpredictable weather, seasons, and even day night cycles. Civilization collapsed en masse, leaving small isolated city states the largest concentrations of foundlings in the realm. Most common and resolute among these pockets were the forts of the zealous dverge, dedicated to their righteous jihad against the wicked ðyrs.
