Aljani

Devilishly extraordinary.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Aljani genetic makeup is many ways similar to humans and there has been theories that they came to existence as evolutionary step of one of the tribes far north in the continent.
Another theory entertain the idea that Aljani were result of magical cataclysm that took place over thousand years ago, which changed and mutated humans within close proximity.
None of those theories were exercise or tested enough to be proven true.
Truth is, Aljani genetics are much more varied and diverse than humans.
Aljani pigmentation generally is much richer than that of humans, where their skin, hair and eyes come basically in any colour or shade existing in nature.
Their blood has silver-white shade.
All Aljani have bone protrusions covered in thin layers of skin, that extend out of their skull or back, commonly referred to as horns or aran. There seem to be no particular pattern to their shape or quantity, individuals possessing from one to up to ten horns. It is believed skin pigmentation and intensity is often connected to both their temperament and magical predispositions, outside of usual subspecies predispositions.

Biological Traits

Aljani are all born with predisposition to certain element and elemental magic comes much easier for them, especially of their own element.
Fire Aljani are resistant to fire element, but vulnerable to water.
Water Aljani are resistant to water, but vulnerable to air.
Air Aljani are resistant to air, but vulnerable to earth.
Earth Aljani are resistant to earth, but vulnerable to fire.

Each Aljani is different, but each subspecies have similarities or common traits carried along with their specific elements, which can be divided into physical and mental traits.

Physical traits.

Fire Aljani

Fire Aljani are resistant to everything that might be connected to element of fire, which includes both literal fire, as well as other sources of extreme heat or smoke. Fire Aljani tend to be sturdier, second only to Earth Aljani and survive more easily in extreme environments, that involve high temperatures. Their body temperatures are naturally higher and tend to heat up in highly emotional or stressful situation. Their bodies can heat up to up to 60 degrees Celsius (140 Fahrenheit), before it becomes dangerous. (Their fever starts from 65 degrees Celsius/ 149 Fahrenheit, while their natural temperature is at 40.5 degrees Celsius/ 104.9 Fahrenheit). They do not tolerate cold or low temperatures, to effect of being exposed to lower temperatures for extended period of time can cause serious harm or even death.
Compared to other Aljani, fire Aljani tend to be on shorter side. Their skin tends to have slightly leathery quality to it and is little bit thicker than other Aljani.
Fire Aljani skin and eye coloration tends to be more intense and in shades of reds, oranges and blacks. Fire Aljani hair tend to be heavier and coarse in structure, which often results in them being hardly to tame, frizzing easily. That is reason why most fire Aljani keep their hair short to make them easier to manage. If they have tails, they have to be shorter, leathery and with spikier, sharper end to them.

Water Aljani

Water Aljani, are resistant to everything connected to water, which offers them ability to breathe under water and durability to cold temperatures, even those that would usually be deadly for anyone else. In turn they suffer infliction from air element, which can result in tolerating change in altitude (air pressure), being easily worn down and feeling dizzy during windy days or being much more vulnerable to lighting damage. They also tend to be more graceful and acrobatic. Water Aljani are natural swimmers, too (Unless they are Chrono Twile).
Compared to other Aljani, they tend to naturally have slimmer, curvy figures. They also tend to be slightly on taller side. Their body temperatures are naturally lower and tend to get lower in highly emotional or stressful situation. Their bodies can cool down to 0 degrees Celsius (32 Fahrenheit), before it becomes dangerous. (Their fever starts from 35 degrees Celsius/ 95 Fahrenheit, while their natural temperature is at 30.3 degrees Celsius/ 86.54 Fahrenheit).
Water Aljani skin and eye coloration tends to be stay within range of blues and blue greens with some elements of white and silver and it is unusual for water Aljani to end up with non-monochromatic colour schemes. Their skin is often covered with larger or smaller patches of shimmering scales that complement their complexion. Water Aljani hair tend to be sleeker and smoother, naturally heavier and flowy and shiny or in complete reverse fluffier like snow or sharp like ice. Their tails tend to be longer with small tassels of various shapes at the end, be it flowy sleek hair or snow-like puffs, or fishlike fins.

Air Aljani

Air Aljani, are resistant to everything connected with air elements, from being able to drift mostly undamaged through strong winds to being able to partially absorb lightning damage, making them far less deadly to this subspecies. They also tend to be lighter on their feet and faster than other subspecies of Aljani. They are also less vulnerable to changes in air pressure, connected with change of altitude.
Compared to other Aljani, they tend to naturally have daintier figures, which does not mean they are incapable of building body mass. In return, as their skin and bone structure is much thinner and lighter, they are far more vulnerable to other kinds of physical damage from bludgeoning to piercing.
Air Aljani skin and eye coloration tends to be softer, in paler, more pastel shades of brighter colours, most popular being soft shades of green and blue, but pastel pinks and yellows are not unusual either. Air Aljani hair tend to be fluffier and have structure similar to that of down feathers of bird. They also tend to have bigger tendency for hair covered tails than other Aljani subspecies.

Earth Aljani

Earth Aljani, are resistant to everything connected to earth, which grands them much higher durability to any physical damage, as both their skin and their bones are much stronger and thicker. In turn they have very low tolerance to fire and heat, making it extremely hard for them to survive in hot environments, as well as take higher damage from fire. They tend to be much better grounded too. Compared to other Aljani, they tend to be sturdier, have more muscular build. Their skin also tend to have spiky or quill like protrusions, that usually are found on their back, but can happen on other parts of their body. Earth Aljani skin and eye coloration tends to be stay within natural, earthly tones like browns, tans and reds. Earth Aljani hair tend to be thicker and heavier, often giving it a little bit of rocky/spiky appearance. Their tails tend to be thicker and shorter, with spikes or quills similar to the once found on their body.

Mental traits:

(OOC: Those are merely helpful suggestions and generalizations when creating a character)   Fire: Fire Aljani tend to be known as the short tempered Aljani, usually with short fuse, blowing up fast, but also easily getting over their initial anger. They are usually also pretty charming and have easy time making friends.   Water: Water Aljani tend to be like their own element, usually calm, soothing and friendly, but when pushed their fury is destructive and unstoppable. They tend to have that calming, guiding aura around them, that makes them perfect leaders or educators.   Air: Air Aljani tend to be a little cheeky and dodgy, but they are also generally soft and caring, hating on direct confrontation and conflicts. They would rather be everyone’s friend or… get out of the way. Often artistic, creative souls.   Earth: Earth Aljani are most grounded and realistic of the Aljani. They step hard on the ground and do not tolerate bullshit. They also often rougher around the edges and have a harder time making connections, but once they do, they are fiercely loyal.

Genetics and Reproduction

Aljani reproduce in the same way as all mammals do.
Mating with Aljani of opposed element is a giant taboo and a no-no in Aljani society as such child usually dies in womb, often taking the mother with it. If such child somehow survives the birth, they are born with intense genetical abnormalities and health issues and there is no record of such child surviving beyond age of 5.
Aljani also do not look kindly upon relationships with other races on account of survival of their own race, but it is not as openly frowned upon as cross-element couples.

Dasharan Amai Pheromone (DA-P):

Named after scientist that discovered the cause of the particular phenomena, Daharan Amai pheromone is reason why Aljani society for centuries was considered strictly matriarchal society. And even tho the social perception changed, the reality remains far from equality, especially in traditional Aljani settlements.
DA-P is a pheromone released by female Aljani, during courting and partnership. Once a female Aljani chooses a male mate, her body starts to release a chemical that draws the chosen partner in, as well as make him far more submissive.
If chosen partner returns the attraction, before the ‘mating’ ritual it’s effect are much stronger and far more durable. If the chosen partner does not return attraction to the female, the effect passes after first 24 hours and this particular Aljani grows immune to that given female’s pheromones.
In cases of returned attraction, the pheromone has the strongest and continued effects for the first twenty-four hours, no matter whether the female remains by his side or not. During that stage, the partner is basically under equivalent of mental control and completely subservient to the mates wishes.
After that, the pheromones remains its strong properties for next 2-3 weeks, as long as the chosen partner is around. After that, the pheromone activates only during continued courting efforts, with relatively lesser effect.
Because of the obvious dangerous implications and borderline mind control effects, the old traditions where women were allowed to use this on whoever they pleased, nowadays, the non-consensual use and abuse of this ritual is considered a crime.
In face of blatant abuse an antidote was developed to null the effects of the pheromone, to avoid physical or mental harm to unwilling participants.

Add notation: DA-P is documented to also work on male partner of different species, but to a much, much lesser effect, basically allowing Aljani female to seem more attractive and alluring.

Growth Rate & Stages

Aljani age faster than humans, being considered functioning adults at the age of 16, making it more or less 5 year equivalent distance between humans and Aljani, aka 5 year old Aljani is equivalent of 10 year old human mental and physical-wise. Aljani are born grey and their pigment and magical predisposition shows only after first half a year of their life.

Ecology and Habitats

Depending on their elemental association, Aljani prefer to settle in neutral zones or places closely associated with their element for example: Water Aljani like to live on islands and Earth Aljani enjoy underground or forest areas.
Aljani usually live either in traditional Aljani settlements or readjusted themselves to live within big city communities.

The traditional settlements are usually arrange from representants of same subspecies, or species compatible for mating. Therefore most common settlements are made of either singular element Aljani, or mixed of Fire-Air or Water-Earth Aljani. Settlements that have representation of all four elements are extremely rare and usually looked at negatively, as inviting temptation among their people to mix with reverse element Aljani and inviting tragedy.

Aljani that grow up in cities, away from traditional settlements, often lose the track of old traditions and grow slightly more lax on the restrictions, scratched the mixed element couples.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Not much different than humans, although their diet requires more meat and iron supplementation.

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

They tend to do slightly better in applied knowledge, learned from experience, than being booksmart.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Aljani, as species induced with level of magic from birth, possess slightly stronger sense of hearing and sight, including Darkvision. In return their sense of touch is much weaker, often resulting in extended harm when they ignore the pain until given stimuli could cause actual harm (Holding hand too long in fire, ignoring bleeding from wound etc)

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Their names are usually short and somewhat connected with their element, but in modern times they seemed to have adapted more common and human named, but they do like names with a meaning.

Beauty Ideals

Their culture seem to worship strength over most other physical aspects. Aljani with features and elements strongly connected with their element are considered closer to ideal beauty than those lacking them. For example: Air Aljani with soft coloration, long flowy hair and long, flowy tail, as well as matching eyes is considered more attractive than air Aljani lacking tail or with short hair.

Gender Ideals

Woman are generally considered to be more dominant and controlling, while men more submissive/loyal guardians.
