Protas Petal

A penlike instrument appearantly made from dull polished green stone featuring many small buttons on one side, which slide along the length, and several rings on the other end which are twisted and click into place. The device, when held, emits a soft glowing light that begins to take the shape of the person holding it in true color. This illusion changes as the levers and dials are manipulated, gaining exotic makeup styles and hair colors as the user choses an image. Then, the top half is pressed in against the bottom half and a jolt of electricity passes through the holder, and thereafter for about a day's time the user adopts the appearance seen in the projected image. Powered by unknown technologies, it is held as a curiosity in the museum of CITY under high security. Once used by the rulers of the city, superstition told of bad spirits inside, so it is no longer used by anyone.

Absolutely nothing is known of its inner workings, but it seems to have an ulimited power source. No markings on its exterior are visible.

History

Known to once have been used by a small artisan family living up in the highlands nearby. They lived in a homestead that produced art, furniture, and housewares. The daughter is said to have left home with the item and used it to barter for her admission into an influential raider clan. It is told that a lone hero was hired by the family to find her, as she ran away without telling anyone. Once he found her, he tried to convince her to leave for home and give up the treacherous life of a raider. The story gets hazy here, and details are only known to a few, but after this, the item is known to be held by nobility until this day.

Significance

It was once used to alter the appearance of a spy who was sent on an assasination mission. After that, rumors of dark spirits within prevented its future use.
