Kreth

This endolith fungus grows in minute crevices in rocks, very slowly growing on a symbiotic bacteria. Known as some of the oldest organisms, specimens date back to the near the initial seeding of foreign life to the planet.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Tiny translucent blue-green and brownish tendrils are rough and slightly slimy, dry very slowly into dark brown threads before being crushed into powder or sold in this state.

Physical & Chemical Properties

An alkaline substance that is bitter and can be crushed into a powder, but becomes slightly sticky when rubbed. Provides a semi-waterproof and tacky surface when rubbed into fabric.

Compounds

The herb, crushed and dried, makes a powerful medicinal tea that has calming effects and induces sleep.

Geology & Geography

This lifeform grows inside rock, and is found almost everywhere at a certain depth, more or less. It is rare to find, but comes up often up during mining operations and is separated and sold to herbalists. Some enterprising alchemists have attempted to cultivate this fungus in deep catacombs, but any success there is unknown.

Origin & Source

It is nearly impossible to reckon beforehand which rocks might contain some. Breaking open large amounts of various rocks from deep underground will usually yield a reliable amount.

Life & Expiration

The herb is usually dried and crushed, and as long as it is kept dry, cool and in a dark container, it will remain usable for a couple of years.

History & Usage

Industrial Use

Its waterproofing property is rarely utilized for book covers, maps and clothing like gloves and boots.

Refinement

Used as a finely crushed powder, is taken as a tea or eaten. Can also be distilled and pressed into tablets with a binder as is done in some of the more industrialized societies.

Hazards

There is a pretty good chance of addiction although as rare as it is, most cannot afford it besides the miners who find it directly and their overbosses.
