Uldien Locations

01. CAER UBAEL
The nominal seat of Clan Ubael, headed by Karsin Ubael, Baron of Uldien, held from the Earl of Kiban. The keep is of recent origin, being first built in 569. Due to lack of funds it was built very spartan, resulting in drafty, wet, and cold accomodations. Clan Ubael left their old manor standing and use it as their residence most of the year.
(a) House of Andryn, bonded ostler.
(b) Stables. Horses are grazed and trained in the commons.
(c) House of Merthen, bonded weaponsmith.
(d) Granaries.
  02. UBAEL MANOR
The Baron can usually be found here when he is in Uldien. The Baron's 14-year-old son has just left the house to begin his squire-traing at the court of his uncle Baron Firith of Kobing.
His daughter Serli is still kept at home, waiting for a good match. The Baron, a sworn family man, is unable to make up his mind in chosing a husband for her, especially in light of the looming succession crisis.
  03. ULDIEN COMMON
By tradition the Baron holds trials in the old common. In the woods on the north end stands the gallows oak, used for hangings in elder days. The gallows and pillory are situated in front of the keep now, but the common is still believed to be haunted by the restless ghosts of criminals executed here and no one comes here after dark.
  04. UBAEL SQUARE / MARKET
The Uldien market is open daily from noon to dusk, except on holidays.
  05. ULDIEN ABBEY
A temple and monastery of the Order of the Spear of Shattered Sorrow. A local pilgrimage site, the abbey holds the remains of Saint Uldine Ubael, a noble lady who was martyred in 376 TR during the Kaldoric Civil War.
She was murdered and raped by rebel troops from Yeged and is highly venerated locally, but has not been officially canonized.
The serolan (abbot) Kolas Ubael (the Baron's 2nddegree- cousin) has started a new attempt to have her recognized by the pontiff in 719 TR which has led to bad blood with Baron Londel of Yeged who would like to have this part of Kaldoric history quietly forgotten. The building at the north end houses a pilgrim's hostel and the monks' cells.
  06. TEMPLE OF PEONI A temple of the female Order of the Balm of Joy. The eastern building holds an infirmary.
  07. BONDING HOUSE
Used for storage of goods. The great caravans on the Silver Way usually pass Uldien by, so business has been slow here. The Baron rents some of the space out to local mercantylers.
  08. MANGAI / MERCANTYLERS' HALL
Both the Aldermen and Mangai councils are held here each month. Otherwise it is used as a social club and trade exchange by the mercantylers.

Size:2 Quality:* Prices: low
Sern has lost much due to bad investments and is desperate to stave off bankruptcy.
  21. EMBALMER (Valon of Misell)
Size:3 Quality:** Prices: average
When custom is slow Valon maintains the execution site for the Baron and takes care of the gibbets placed along the Shebra and Getha roads (not shown). This makes him a man hated by many of the residents. Valon seems not to care as long as he makes a profit.
  22. DARIUNE HOUSE
This opulent house belongs to Earl Troda Dariune of Kiban.
Originally it was owned by a widowed mercantyler. Upon his death it fell to the Baron who gave it to his liege to make up for fees lost in a bad harvest two years ago.
The Earl uses it as a town house during his infrequent visits, otherwise he leaves it to unwed veteran household knights as an old-age residence.
Currently it is inhabited by Sir Ranval of Corry and Sir Fendar of Jeldyn, both over 60 and in bad health. Unfortunately they cannot stand each other and their loud, foul-mouthed arguing is often a main point in local gossip.
  23. METALSMITH (Thyris of Nellag)
Size:4 Quality:*** Prices: average (high+)
Specializes in pilgrim badges of pewter and silver blessed by the Laranian priests for a 50%-mark-up in price. His other metalwares are bought locally for average prices. Thyris is a widower of 34 who is looking for a new wife. Unfortunately he is very shy towards women so this might take a while.
  24. OSTLER (Gweryn of Hosran)
Size:9 Quality:**** Prices: average
Gweryn's warhorses are sought after by knights all over the shire who are thus far willing to tolerate his mean temper.
Towards the horses he is gentle, towards his fellow man he tends to be very aggressive. Local gossips wager how long it will take until he hangs for accidentally killing a man in a tavern brawl or insulting the wrong nobleman.
  25. TOLLHOUSE AND -BRIDGE
A fortified stone tollhouse on the Getha Road maintained by the Baron for the Earl. The tollkeeper Irgen of Ranvar, a former mercenary in the employ of the Earl and winner of the archery competition at the Olokand tournament in 717, earns some extra coin by training the Uldien militia.
The tollhouse and -bridge are closed at nightfall, forcing travellers on the Getha road to to seek accomodation after dusk. Tolls are 1f on foot (Uldien residents are exempt), 2f per animal, 3f per cart/wagon.
  26. MILLER (Hamlym of Sligar)

Hamlym is one of the wealthiest (and least liked) men in Uldien, especially since he sold the old mill to an excentric scholar five years ago. He is very arrogant and likes to show off his wealth.
  27. THE BEAR AND STAFF INN (Kenna of Lennis)
Size:8 Quality:*** Prices: low
Named after the bear-baiting pit which was once part of the inn. Kenna is a merry widow of 29 who keeps a friendly, slightly rowdy house since she is free of her violent ex-husband.
The Mangai have granted the franchise to her last year and she seems in no hurry to re-marry.
The bear and staff is popular with local farmers and laborers and is the regular stop-over of travellers on the Getha Road arriving after dark.
Show spoiler
Local rumor claims that Kenna is connected to the Lia-Kavair and that they had a hand in her husband's untimely demise.

  28. OLD MILL / CHANTRY
Size:2 Quality:*** Prices: ?
The old mill was bought five years ago by an old scholar named Korrin of Pargin whom local gossips suspect to be a wizard.
Show spoiler
For once they are right. He is an Odivshe shenava who seeks peace and quiet to pursue his studies and train his apprentice Shirla of Torval, a lively 15-year-old adored and feared by the local youths
. Korrin supplements his income by tutoring the children of noblemen and wealthy townsmen in history, mathematics and literacy.
  29. FISHERMAN (Lenward of Chortyn)
Size:4 Quality:**** Prices: average
Lenward is deemed the best fisherman on the Nephen river. He sells his catches in Ubael Square and holds a license from the Earl as a pearl-diver. Normally this would make him a wealthy man, but since he has 14 living children, he is well-off at most.
He is a good friend of Korrin of Pargin who teaches his children their letters in his spare time and the two of them can often be seen drinking together in the bear and staff.
