Uldien History

The first human settlers in the Uldien region were Jarin who arrived about 1150 BT. They founded a small settlement named Tyannild at the confluence of the Nephen and Selene rivers which over the following centuries flowered into a small kingdom of the same name.
The king of Tyannild and his huscarls fought loyally beside the elder peoples against the Lythian invaders, but after the Battle of Sorrows in 683 BT they faced the Lythians alone. In the region the Jarin proved to be sufficiently numerous to retain much of their heritage, gradually evolving a hybrid culture and absorbing various Lythian peoples.
In 113 TR the kingdom of Tyannild submitted to Lothrim the Foulspawner, its last king Uldas agreeing to pay him tribute. After the death/disappearance of Lothrim in 120, a period of chaos ensued. Within a few decades, the area stabilized and swore fealty to the newly crowned king of Serelind in 142 TR. By 178 TR, Serelind and the other three kingdoms along the Kald had grown wealthy as a result of a generation of mild weather, successful crops and stable political relations. When the weather took a turn for the worse, starting around 178 TR, the various barbarians surrounding the area began to raid the kingdoms on the Kald for food and other necessities.
Serelind was hit by raiding parties of the Eastern Taelda repeatedly in 179 TR and Tyannild was sacked and burnt down during the winter. The survivors were taken in by king Medrik I. and were able to exact revenge on their tormentors during the battle of Noneth the following year, turning back the Taelda and securing the region. Tyannild was rebuilt and renamed Uldien in commemoration of its last king.
Under the house of Tane, Uldien initially flourished. Trade along the rivers increased and a measure of wealth finally came to the region. When king Maranos died in 362 TR things again took a turn for the worse.
The Kaldoric Civil War repeatedly swept over central Kaldor erasing the weak foundation of Uldien's fledgling market. Sir Remnar Ubael, the constable holding Uldien at the time, careened between the rival claimants to the throne until finally settling in the camp of Fierth the Usurper in 376 TR.
He had just left for Kiban to swear fealty to Fierth when mercenary troops from Yeged under the command of freelance Jaland Londel captured Uldien and raped and brutally murdered his wife Uldine who had taken up rulership in his absence. Ubael was mad with grief when he heard of the atrocity and fought valiantly in the last years of the war, finally attaining a hereditary noble title and the manorial fief of Uldien in 379 TR, swearing allegiance to Earl Qywald Dariune of Kiban, and rebuilding the town once again.
He also founded Uldien Abbey and had his wife buried there in a grand marble tomb. She has been venerated as a Laranian saint locally ever since.
The restoration and rulership of house Artane granted many opportunities to clan Ubael. Trade flourished once again and a series of strong lords who wrung concession after concession from weak monarchs saw Uldien raised to the status of Barony in 569 TR.
Building of the keep began the same year but proved to be more difficult than anticipated. The economic rise of Gardiren, Kiban, and Tashal curtailed Uldien's market and the additional drain of resources led to belt-tightening measures in the execution of construction work on the keep.
Ever since, the Barons have preferred to live in their old manor, rather than the drafty, wet keep. When the fall of the house of Artane culminated in the Barional revolt of 599 TR, the Baron once again hesitated in chosing a side. At literally the last moment he declared his support for Clan Elendsa and faithfully served his liege Earl Alessa Dariune in the field, a decision which kept his head on his shoulders, and gained him new lands and status. Sir Basca Ubael was rewarded with manors captured from the Earl of Osel, increasing the size of the Barony of Uldien, and in turn swearing allegiance to Earl Dariune of Balim anew.
