Tashal Districts
In addition to Caer Elend, the city is divided into ten districts, but there are no barriers to traffic between them. These divisions are political, but also social.
Merchants and craftsmen often have signs to tout their locations, but few streets have placards to help guide strangers.
[A] Caer Elend: Balasa Bridge and Caer Elend mark the eastern end of the Salt Route, the kingdom’s trade route to the west. This district is dominated by the castle and the royal government courts and offices.
[B] Meyvinel: Home to temples and the College of Heralds, this rich district is calm, safe, and peaceful throughout the year.
[C] Heru Gate: A district of master craftsmen, laborers, and freemen working in manual trades. Many deals are made in the taverns and guildhalls that line its streets.
[D] Kalabin: Skilled artisans and rich merchants inhabit these aging mansions and townhouses. Privately contracted guards conspicuously protect the houses and the wealth that lies inside them.
[E] Eastside: Home to the city’s working poor. The district’s muddy streets run between tenements, bawdy houses, and grimy workshops. Traffic is not confined to the surface streets; locals make their way across roofs as well.
[F] Mangai Square: This district is the heart of the city’s commerce year round. Traders, customers, and suppliers jostle and pass each other on the streets. If an item can be found in Tashal, someone in the Square knows where to find it.
[G] Medrik: This mercantile district is quiet and peaceful. Once home to grand townhouses, it now bustles with what passes for Tashal’s middle class.
[H] Haldana: Many nobles and wealthy guildsmen have grand townhouses among the walled mansions in this area. The temple of Larani’s imposing grandeur sits next to Haldan Square’s commercial bustle, exemplifying the city’s piety and practicality in one view.
[I] Weavertown: This odiferous section of the city is dominated by the Clothiers’ Guild and the poor free laborers who weave, full, and dye much of Kaldor’s exportable cloth. Others live and work here as well, of course, but the stench and reputation stick to them nonetheless.
[J] Lyryn Village: Located outside the Ternua Gate, this village is home to the city’s amphitheater and to actors, playwrights, stagemen, and other members of the Thespians’ Guild.
[K] Artoen: North of the Heru Gate, this village is the site of the city’s cemetery and gibbets. Many strange tales of ghosts and spirits are told about Artoen. Most of its populace are farmers who sell their produce and labor to city merchants.
