Sir Maldan Harabor
Sir Maldan Harabor is the helder of Olokand Castle for the king and the Sheriff of Meselyneshire .
He is the eldest bastard of King Miginath.
He is a ruthless and ambitious man; his desire for the throne is undoubted.
The ambitious Sir Maldan Harabor may be the most powerful noble in the kingdom. The eldest son of King Miginath, Maldan’s mother, Lesel of Harabor, was the daughter of a mercantyler.
Lesel bore Maldan in 673. In 675, she bore Miginath another son, Koris, but the delivery did not go well, and she died shortly after that birth.
When Prince Haldan died unexpectedly in 682, Prince Miginath became the heir apparent, and spent the next ten years as the Sheriff of Meselyne.
He took along his two sons who grew up at Caer Olokand. At age sixteen, Maldan was sent to Hutop to squire for the Sheriff of Osel, his uncle Prince Merik Elendsa. In 694, soon after his father became king, Maldan showed his worth in action against the Pagaelin at Oselbridge and was promptly knighted by his uncle.
In 695, Maldan transferred to the Royal High Guard for the next four years. He married the lady Areta Alkinil in 697. In 699, following the birth of their first son, Maldan was appointed Sheriff of Meselyne and then Constable of Olokand.
Although never acknowledged by his father, Olokand has traditionally been held by the eventual Elendsa heir to the throne. The Earldom of Olokand has four vassal fiefs, all held by powerful barons with royal blood. Relations with these vassals is strained at times. They all respect Maldan’s abilities but are wary of his ambition.
Maldan is intensely competitive and jealous of those of full-noble birth. He considers his appointments a clear signal from the king regarding succession, but he believes his father still wants him to prove himself worthy. To this end he has put his considerable energies into acquiring wealth and military power to convince his father of his readiness for the crown. He controls his holdings with incredible attention to detail and surrounds himself with men he can count on.
