Sir Conwan Elendsa

Sheriff of Semethshire
Nephew of King Miginath Elendsa of Kaldor, and the eldest son of the king’s younger brother Brandis, Conwan has the best claim to the throne by direct male decent from the line of Torastra, as the eldest male with the Elendsa clan name.
This makes Conwan the most legitimate male candidate.
Unfortunately, he has taken an oath renouncing his claim to the throne.
Twelve years ago, the 21 year old Conwan wished to marry a maiden of a minor noble clan, Hesena Inamis, who was a devout worshipper of Save-K’nor.
While King Miginath understood what it was to marry for love, Conwan’s great-uncle Kalabin Elendsa, then the Laranian Serekela (archbishop) of Kaldor, opposed the match on the grounds that children of a possible heir to the throne should be raised as Laranians.
The impulsive young Conwan took an oath to Kalabin renouncing his right to the throne. Soon after, the corrupt Serekela was assassinated.
Now 33, Conwan is in his uncle Minigath’s favor and holds the post of the Sheriff of Semethshire. He is popular with many nobles in the kingdom, who think he would make the best successor to Minigath.
However, the current Laranian Serekela, Edine Kynne, has refused to release Conwan from his oath.
Conwan will have a hard time taking the throne if opposed by the church.
Conwan has some military forces as Sheriff, and is also in command of the army of Chelmarch, since the deputy warden Korus Ynel reports to him (nominally the Chelmarch Warden is king Miginath, but he delegates to Conwan). He could easily find other allies if he were released from his oath.
Motives: Have his oath annulled so he can take the throne. In the meantime, keep any potential usurpers off the throne.
