Olokand Economics

Meselynshire produces significant quantities of tin, copper, and salt, and it is all traded in Olokand.
Much of the output of the mines is transported downriver to Tashal, where it is further distributed by smaller mercantylers to smiths and salters across Kaldor.
Olokand is the southern terminus of the Fur Road. Every spring, a large, well-escorted caravan brings furs and hides, wild beasts, whale products, amber, honey, and other products from the north to Olokand.
The Fur Road is very rough, always muddy, and peppered with many fords across streams swollen by snow melt. The caravan consists mainly of pack animals, which handle these conditions much better than carts.
The caravan’s arrival from the north around mid- Kelen is eagerly awaited. A few northerners trade their wares in Olokand for metals, salt, and horses and then return to the north. Most traders prefer to press on to Tashal themselves, where higher prices and more exotic goods can be obtained.
The caravan is in town for at least a tenday while man and beast recover from the arduous trek south. The inns of Olokand are filled with rowdy mercenaries and teamsters ready to spend or gamble their pay, and prostitutes, thieves, and hawkers equally eager to relieve them of their money.
After the caravan departs, there is a brief calm of four tendays before the Royal Chelebin Tournament of Chivalry begins. Begun by Chelebin III almost sixty years ago in 662, this is the largest tourney in all of Hârn, attracting contestants from Chybisa, Melderyn, and far Kanday.
Freemen and nobles travel from far and wide to see and be seen at the social events of the tourney, and all bring their personal retinues. The Royal Chelebin Tournament of Chivalry is of great economic importance to the local economy.
Revenues for the earldom are increased by aids and other feudal payments from four vassal barons. Most of this revenue is used to maintain the castle and support the king and his large household when they are in residence.

Taxes
Since Olokand has no town walls, the town is considered for tax purposes to extend one arrow flight from Caer Olokand, except across the Kald. The ambiguity of this definition leads to jurisdictional disputes, but most are resolved at the shire moot in favor of the King.
