Clan Ethasiel
CLAN ETHASIEL
Title: Baron of Setrew
Hold: Setrew Keep
Liege: Earl Curo of Neph
An old family from near Gardiren, Clan Ethasiel has risen quickly and violently to the ranks of Kaldor's nobility.
In 672 Sir Romlach Ethasiel set out with King Torastra to Trobridge as the captain of the King's Guard.
In the Battle of the Chelna Gap, King Torastra was saved in part by the quick actions and sturdy sword of Sir Romlach.
These actions gave the king much trust in the sword and loyalty of Sir Romlach. During the subsequent Battle of Ramala Gap, Sir Romlach continued to serve as captain of the King's Guard and gave much advice concerning the possible 'underhanded' tactics the Thardans might use.
In 675, Torastra invaded Chybisa and Sir Romlach served as captain of the advance force, investing the area north of the Ulmerian River with sufficient ferocity to draw out the Chybisan army for an uneven battle in which they were easily defeated.
Setrew keep had reverted to the crown when the last baron of Clan Kephria died with no heirs in 666.
King Torastra promoted his captain to Baron of Setrew in 676.
In early 688, King Torastra, seeking funds from the Earl of Neph to raise a new army to reconquer Chybisa, made Baron Ethasiel a vassal of Earl Melsen Curo.
While this gained Torastra a good quantity of gold, it was not enough to raise an army from amongst barons tired of Torastra's campaigns.
Romlach died in 693, some say of his great sorrow at the passing of his king and friend Torastra.
Romlach's son Wevran succeeded by murdering his older brother Haran and hiding the evidence.
Wevran is a true despot, ruling Setrew in a harsh and repressive manner.
Wevran is extremely ambitious, and has offered support to Maldan Harabor in any civil war that might result after Miginath's death in hopes of promotion.
Unfortunately, Wevran lacks subtlety and is not highly trusted by Maldan.
Nevertheless, Wevran's appeals to Maldan Harabor's ambitions have effectively removed the Sheriff's desire to investigate any complaints emanating from the baron's lands.
Wevran's only son Romlach is a true descendant of his namesake, being one of the most feared knights on the tournament circuit.
Sir Romlach handles all military matters for his father and is something of a bully.
This attitude has gained him some enmity from other knights, most notably Sir Haldare Venera, the Constable of Tashal.
Baron Wevran's elder daughter, Apella, has joined the Church of Larani.
She hates the misrule of her father and brother and has sworn to return someday to right their wrongs.
His younger daughter, Nerelin, is joining the Church of Peoni and hopes to never see the rest of her family again.
The baron's younger brother, Torald, has gained appointment as the Royal Master of Hunt and keeps his distance from his elder brother, knowing full well what might happen if Wevran should suspect him of baronial ambition.
The baron's oldest sister, Mylael, has married Sir Ranalas Tocaryn, the lord of Wythian manor near Olokand.
Wevran's middle sister, Thuryle, joined the Church of Peoni and has not been seen in 15 years.
There is some evidence she died in the Rape of Thay, but none of her relatives are aware of this.
The baron's youngest sister, Amersyn, led a life of hedonism and debauchery in Tashal for almost a decade.
In 718, she found religion, and was preparing to join the Church of Peoni as an acolyte, when she was killed by a falling slate shingle at the townhouse of Sir Danyes Bernan, the Constable of Kyg.
Wevran Ethasiel, baron of Setrew, is a vain man, involved in numerous petty intrigues and he is not highly trusted.
It is said that any cleverly worded appeal is likely to get a lengthy hearing at the baron’s table. This is very true and Wevran is not a stranger to commit treason as long as he believes it will gain him.
He has more than once been reminded by his liege, Earl Curo, that if he sidesteps from his obligations he will feel the wrath from Gardiren.
The baron believes the earl is too preoccupied with other matters and takes these types warnings as formal and necessary, but without any real threat in them.
Wevran is also weak to the sheriff of Olokand, Maldan of Harabor, and has secretly informed him that in an eventual civil war he will support the bastard son of the king. Maldan who thinks Wevran speaks the truth knows the danger this man present and is very careful in not promising him too much.
The baron of Setrew has a few non-noble connections with brigands, thieves and other ruffians. Wevran enjoys playing with fire and so far he has succeeded in staying away from the long arm of the king’s law.
Baron Wevran and his son Romlach govern Setrew.
Even though Wevran is the baron he has delegated all military matters to his son.
Romlach, who is a warrior as his grandfather once was, enforces a discipline above the normal. His warriors equal the royal guard, although they are not as many, and they effectively patrol Setrew and its surroundings.
A handful of selected guildsmen informs and helps the baron on economical matters.
