The Fallen Kingdom of Granniq

Once considered the greatest of the human kingdoms, The Kingdom of Granniq was both a symbol of power and stability for humanity. Known for its green fields, astonishing sunsets, and questing knights, Granniq was a place of both peace and power. Located west of Stahlgrand and the surrounding Widlands, in between the Frozen Seas and the Ocean of Blood lays the remnants of what was once the largest and most powerful of the human kingdoms.   Granniq was once a place of peace. They worshipped the sun god Thophion, a powerful deity who was said to have brought peace to Granniq. The royal family of Granniq was said to have descended from Thophion, in essence making them demigods. This correlated with their god-like appearance, as they were said to have had white hair, an ethereal appearance, and grown to the heights of 9 or even 10 feet tall. Their nobility was also sprawling, with their culture and art being influential to the rest of the human kingdoms. Their influence is still felt to this day, as a great number of Stahlgrand's nobility, including the Seven Great Noble Houses, are descendants of Granniqian nobility who fled the nation as it fell.   More than 5000 years ago, the last king of Granniq, Alain Nazaire, was experimenting on unlocking the secret to immortality. These experiments led to the "Undead Curse," a curse that did indeed grant immortality too all of those who died in Granniq, albeit in the most profane of forms. Those who died in Granniq would always return as undead, losing a tiny piece of their humanity and sanity. The more times an individual would die, the less human they would become until they eventually devolved into feral murderers. These "Fallen Undead" now roam the majority of the country, having now killed enough of the populace to turn most of its people into Fallen. This, alongside the "Endless Night" curse, effectively put an end to Granniq forever.   What remains of Granniq now is a cursed, desolate wasteland. Most of its cities and villages are abandoned and in a state of disrepair. Its once beautiful fields are gone. Roaming bands of Fallen Undead roam the nation, endlessly killing one another and anyone else who wanders into the nation. There are pockets of civilization left, such as the La Cité des Cloches located in central Granniq, where civilized Undead still remain. With that said, the wills of the Granniq survivors are broken, and the nation continues to fall into a greater state of disrepair with little hope for the nation.    These days, very little outsiders travel through Granniq. It is neighbors with a few pockets of Devonians located on the coasts, and Maerin from The Wildlands do enter the country occasionally to scavenge for resources.
