Arsames was born 10 years into Darius the Red's reign to his wife Artystone "Esther." After trying for years they finally succeeded in having a son. He was born smaller than many of the others and stayed that way. He was treated harshly by his brother Xerxes, but had a loving relationship with his adopted brother Ariabignes. Being small, he grew up pampered by his doting mother. He was always shy and nervous and remained that way until after the insurrection.

He was taken captive by Alexander of Xanthus at the age of 20. His name was changed to Leonis and for 3 years he was subjected to horrific experiments and combat tests. He was delivered from captivity by Nadia, his weapon's instructor who revealed herself to be a member of a grand resistance led by none other than his own Grandfather Cyrus. For the next 2 years he studied under Cyrus, learning the ways of the paladin.

On the eve of his final test, he was reunited with his long lost brother Ariabignes, going simply by Kai, and the two of them had a passionate night.
